Reading Response Her Own: Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey, a name known worldwide for her many achievements, but over the years we’ve gotten to know her as well. Starting off in Baltimore on a local news cast station, she was later moved to the morning talk show thinking it would be a better fit, and they were right! Her lively personality and lack of fear of asking the “hard questions”, she was offered a permanent job on the show. Quickly she became an icon of the eighties. Her ability to wear her heart on her sleeves made her personable to all that watched, grew and still grow to love her. Though many may have already known about Oprah’s start in Baltimore, may did not know much about her life before then, but luckily she’s an open book to all that know her. We knew her basic background, from where she was born and raised to how her career began, but we didn’t know the intimate details until later on. Not afraid of what others may think, many of her shows discussed the tough topics such as rape and child abuse, but no one expected her to have ever dealt with any of these topics. In 1985 during a show about incest, Oprah revealed she had been continuously molested from ages nine to fourteen. Though this shocked all who heard, her ability to share that part of her live “broke the silence for millions of women”. As the women able to not only sympathize, but also empathize with her audience revealing her secret was probably the strongest thing she could have done, being the reciprocate of the empathy. “…and my heart can believe it, I know I can achieve it”. Oprah knew in her mind and heart what she wanted to be and where she wanted to go in life and like most, started form nothing. Her story is an example for all that if you want anything bad enough in life, you can get it if you believe you can.
