Oedipus Rex vs. Hamlet
In the play Hamlet: Prince of Denmark, a young prince is in search of the truth behind his father’s murder. At first, Hamlet sees the ghost of his deceased father and it tells him he was murdered by the now current king, Hamlet’s Uncle Claudius. Hamlet has to think about how he will get revenge for his fathers death, but because his only knowledge came from a ghost that only Hamlet heard speak, he is hesitant to get his revenge quickly. Hamlet does everything he can to show others the truth he knows. It is important to Hamlet that he gets revenge but he also wants to torment the king and show everyone the truth. Hamlet knows his anger toward his Uncle may cause confusion in his judgement of the truth so he is hesitant to kill him right away. Hamlet second-guesses himself throughout the play only to end up dying, but not before he kills Claudius. In Oedipus the king, a child is born to a royal couple, this king and queen want to know how their child will be in the future. So they ask an oracle to tell them the future and it tells them he will kill his father and marry his mother. They have the child taken away to be killed, so they save themselves, but instead the child ends up in a new castle and is raised by another couple as their own child. They never tell Oedipus that he is not their own. When Oedipus hears he is to kill his father and marry his mother, he leaves his parents and searches for a new residence. Except he meets up with a man on the road and kills him. He then finds a castle that is being terrorized by a sphinx and answers the riddle it asks. He then marries the Queen and rules over the kingdom. In the end, the city is threatened by a plague that the oracle said will cease when the city gets rid of the one who murdered the king, Oedipus announces that the murderer will be punished. However, while searching for the truth Oedipus discovers that he is the murderer and the son of his wife. In the end, Oedipus finds his wife/mother

Throughout the play, the prince of Denmark is presented with many opportunities to kill his father's murderer Claudius but there was always something holding him back. There are different theories of why Hamlet may find it difficult to execute the ghost’s request.     Before Oedipus was born an oracle prophesized to the king and queen of Thebes that if they had a son then he would kill his father and marry his mother. In order to prevent the oracle’s prophecy from happening when Oedipus was born the king and queen gave the baby to a shepherd and ordered him to take the child into the pasture and leave him to die. Unable to do as told the Shepherd took the child to a nearby town where he was adopted. When Oedipus got older and found out we was adopted he ran away, on the road to Thebes Oedipus met King Laius, his true father. Unaware of each other's identities the two had an argument over whose chariot had the right-of-way. Oedipus' pride led him to murder Laius, his biological father, fulfilling part of the oracle's prophecy. Shortly after Oedipus encounters the Sphinx who put a curse on Thebes until someone could solve its riddle. Oedipus solves the riddle of the Sphinx, and frees the kingdom of Thebes from the curse. Oedipus's reward for freeing the kingdom of Thebes from the curse is the kingship and the hand of Queen Jocasta, his biological mother. The entire prophecy is then unknowing fulfilled.…

    In Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, the idea of revenge is seen as the central motive in which the character Hamlet possesses, in which all other ideas or concepts stem from. The play Hamlet tells the story of how the main character, Hamlet, is approached by the Ghost of his father, the late king of Denmark, telling him the events of his murder committed by his own brother (Claudius) in order to claim the throne. The Ghost asks Hamlet to “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (Act 1, Scene 5), which Hamlet responds by saying “Haste me to know ’t, that I, with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to my revenge”. The irony with this is that later on in the play Hamlet procrastinates taking revenge on his uncle, Claudius, because he is uncertain that he actually committed this crime. Shakespeare uses this idea of irony to portray how Hamlet is not truly revengeful because of his lack in belief of the ghost. However, although Hamlet does not act quickly in his revengeful plot because of this uncertainty, he is determined to find an answer on whether the Ghost is right or wrong because of the anger he feels towards Claudius.
