The Bathroom

Which room is the only room in your house where you are to yourself and no one will bother you? In my house, there is only one room. My children refer to it as dad's office. I have heard this place referred to as the temple of the porcelain goddess. I have spent countless hours in this room. Have you guessed what room it is?

My bathroom has to be one of the prettiest rooms in our house. The floor and the walls are of white tile, which are shiny and clean. There is a beautiful ocean wave design consisting of three different shades of blue. These waves go around on all four walls and are about a third of the way up the wall from the floor. In the waves, there are blue and yellow striped angelfish and numerous different seashells. There are two windows in the bathroom, both of which have dark blue shades. We have many little porcelain ships placed all over the shelves and a mirror that resembles the steering wheel of a sailboat.

The bathroom has fussboden heizung, a German word that translates to foot floor heater. A thermostat controls the heater. Therefore, in the winter, the room is always the right temperature and the floor is not cold. In the summer, it is always nice and cool due to the tiles, and I can open the windows and let in the breeze.

Sometimes I go in the bathroom and just sit there, and read a book or the paper. I know that no one will disturb me and that it will be quiet. My wife has found me many a morning sound asleep on the bathroom floor. I do this routine a lot in the winter when I get terrible back pains. The heated hard floor relaxes and sooths my back pains. I can sit in the shower with the hot water running for an hour or more, just to relax after a long hard day at work. On the other hand, I can soak in the tub after a good work out on the weekend. Sometimes, I practice giving classes in the mirror just to see what facial expressions I make while describing the subject matter. Here, I do not have to be afraid of how terrible my singing is because it is just the water and me.

I think the reason why I like this room because it makes me feel light. I get the sense that I am some place else. Sometimes, I feel like I am at the beach, while other times, I feel as though I am under the ocean with many fish and boats all around me. It may be the mere fact that I am all alone and that I am away from the sounds of everyday life.

Everyone in the house knows that they do not disturb dad when he is in the bathroom! I bet many of you have spent countless hours in yours. Therefore, now you know the location of my throne, the one place I call my own. Like I said before there are just so many things you can do while you are all alone in the bathroom. You can read, write, and sing, or just be alone. So the next time that you are in the bathroom remember what I have said, it might just be the one place you too can call your throne.

Upon entering the living room, the golden honey colored hardwood floor creaks underfoot and the fireplace stands out from the roughly textured, earthy green walls that rise up to the textured white ceiling. The long narrow boards that make up the beautifully maintained hardwood floor run lengthwise making this room look even bigger than it actually is. The textured ceiling was done in multi-directional, sweeping, fan patterns that resemble seashells. Hanging in the center of the room is a fifty-two inch brass-trimmed ceiling fan with five dark wood colored blades. Below the fan blades are three frosted glass, bell shaped covers which shade the light bulbs.…

The war on drugs whether wrong, right, or indifferent, has yielded a plethora of life changing outcomes for many United States citizens. Both the plaintiff and the defendant have their own side of the dispute, and yet somehow the plaintiff in the non-stop ‘cash grab’ that’s so conveniently nicknamed the “War on Drugs” gets the benefit of zero-tolerance, or minimum sentencing. In most cases the defendants simply are doomed from the beginning due to horrible living conditions and lack of jobs in the area. Coupled with police brutality and prejudice pointed toward the African-American community as a whole, it should come as no surprise that in 2011 there were more African-Americans in prison or “under the watch” of the justice system than were enslaved in the United States in 1850. This is not any more a war on drugs than the Iraqi Conflict was a war on the seizure of weapons of mass destruction.…

The piece is a small bedroom with doors in the middle of the left and right walls and a bay window on the wall directly in front of the viewer. These three walls are the only ones visible; one will see the room as if they were standing against the fourth wall. The walls are pale sea foam blue with the doors a contrasting darker smoky teal. The floor seems to be one piece with the slightest outline of hunter green to identify planks or tiles in the front right hand corner of the piece. The color of this floor is that of an old penny, a faded red with hints of orange with notes of deep sienna. The left wall bears a chair in front of the left door; this chair is a dark yellow kitchen chair with a darker mint green seat. Also hanging on the wall is a black non-descript hook containing a dark mint green towel. This towel bears a dark red trim creating a green margin on the end of this towel. Caddy corner to the left wall and the wall directly in front of the viewer is an orange washstand; this washstand holds a light blue decanter possibly made from class, this decanter is accompanied by a matching drinking glass. A wash basin and pitcher also accompany the decanter; the pair matches the smoky blue of the doors. A light brown, possibly pine toiletry box rests on top of the wash basin. On the far left of the wall…

    In The Kitchen

In the Kitchen In the story In the Kitchen, Henry Louis Gates Jr. makes the point that there are some things that you just cannot take away from people, such as character traits and people's ways of life. Those are things that you cannot get rid of no matter how much "hair grease" you put in your life. When Gates was a young boy, he would watch his mother do the people's hair in their kitchen and would marvel at how the black person's hair would always go back to the kings no matter how good it looked when it was done up, when it hit the water, it went right back to the kinks. The kitchen in Gates' mother's house was also a permanent, irredeemable kink. When a black person would straighten their hair, as soon as they washed it or even got water on their hair, it would go back to the natural kink that it originated at. Many people in life try to forget their background or where they came from and ignore their roots, but that is a part of you that you will always have with you and no matter how much you try and make it go away, your roots are a permanent thing and can never be erased. In the past 30 years, the superficialities of the world have become the predominant thing. Models are 15 pounds underweight and starve themselves to look like the "ideal" woman, whites try to be and look like blacks, blacks try to be and look like whites. There are so many ways in the world today that you can cover up your roots and who you are, but there is not one way that you can get rid of them. From plastic surgery, to skin lightening or darkening, to the clothes we wear or the way we talk. Nobody should ever be ashamed of who they are, that is what makes America beautiful as a country, because we have so much diversity between our citizens, and that we are able to come together and work as one nationality.…

    My Own Backyard

    • 1148 Words

As I open my backdoor, the pressures of life seem to go away instantly because I wonder what I am about to see. Because I never know what is outside those doors until I open them, the deck, which is sixteen feet by sixteen feet, is what I call my “room of magic.” I open the door, and step out onto the balcony. On the left back corner is a futon that sits facing my backyard, and a swing hangs on the opposite back corner of the futon. There are also chairs and tables scattered throughout the deck for sitting. Two large, decorative clay pots that have lavender growing in them sit at the entrance of the stairwell and two wooden barrels cut in half contain jasmine rest on the balcony in the center edges of the front and back columns. The two columns in the front of the deck have a Wisteria vine growing up them that connect in the middle column with grapelike clusters of lavender flowers growing from it until late fall. On the back columns, ivy vines grow that stay green all year. Reaching from one column to the other both vines give the deck shade by covering the top of the banisters surrounding the balcony and stretching to the roof as if they were walls covering a room. This is why I refer to it as a room.…

In the short story “My Parent’s Bedroom” by Uwem Akpan, the country of Rwanda is having a civil war between the Hutus and Tutsis, the primary trying to eradicate the latter. The Hutus force Papa to kill Maman, which she convinces him that it was only solution. However, it wasn’t the best choice in his family’s situation. The Wizard and the Hutus arrive to ensure that Papa slays his Tutsi spouse, Maman. Papa murders her to please the crowd, “If you let any Tutsi live, you’re dead. And then they begin to leave, some patting him on the back,” (27). I find this to be the only major decision made in the story because it severs the whole family’s connection with one another, and especially leaves Monique traumatized. There were few consequences,…

As I sit bundled up in a warm, brown, comfy hoodie and a big, pink blanket, I say to myself, “Where is my favorite place to be?” Well that’s easy, it’s here in my room. My room is the one place I can be me. I can be perfectly content by myself in this room, or happily laying watching TV with my boyfriend. When sitting on my pink, candy cane, stripped bed with my lime green, fluffy to the touch blanket and hot pink, 0black pillows, I look around my room and I notice that all my walls are different yet they all tie perfectly together.…
