Joey Stay At School Case Study
Suspending Joey will maintain consistency with the school’s policy; however, the effects of the suspension would be ineffective and detrimental to Joey. Joey must be exposed to consistent rules and expectations so that he is able to practice and model expected behavior. If Joey is removed from school, he will be unable to maintain consistency. In addition, the learning lost in those three days at school cannot be made up in its entirety. It is also clear that Joey’s home life is complicated, and by having Joey stay at home for three days my increase the chances of abuse from Joey’s mother and stepfather. Joey must be in a safe environment that will help him to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Completing an in school suspension would take Joey away from instruction as well as his peers. This form of punishment would not teach Joey expected behavior or give him the opportunity to practice the expected behavior. In addition, he will miss the planned learning experiences during those three days.

Furthermore, when logical consequences are known, students understand what will occur if those expectations are not met. Further, Joey’s logical consequence should include loss of privilege, in conjunction with apologizing to his peers in a meaningful manner. In addition, the system should also include genuine incentives for expected behavior. That way, Joey, and all students, will come to value the intrinsic rewards rather than extrinsic rewards. If the aforementioned policies were established at Joey’s school, it would provide him with a clear set of expectations so that he is able to develop self-control. Thus, Joey will learn how to manage himself within the classroom, thereby greatly reducing the chance of repeated behavior

    Rather than promoting a safe environment of learning, and opportunity, schools have made it almost impossible to tell the difference between a school yard and a jail yard. Due to “zero tolerance” policies, police presents, and relying on suspensions and expulsions for minor infractions, students are missing out of their education. There once was time when disciplinary issues could be resolved by school administrators, but now students are either suspended or expelled on the spot. Students who have never been suspended or expelled are at less of a risk for incarceration than those that have been. There are approximately 3.3 million suspensions and over 100,000 expulsions each year. Zero tolerance policies were first adopted in the mid 1990s, since then the rates have been on a constant climb. Even though, the rates of school violence has been declining, suspension and expulsion rates are still rising. Zero tolerance policies have especially affected elementary and middle school children. “Seven of every thousand pre-schoolers are expelled from preschool programs, over three times the rate of expulsions in grades K-12” according to SentencingProject.org.     Bloomberg enacted few policies to ensure safety in schools. In 2003, Mayor Bloomberg announced a new disciplinary code calling of an “immediate, consistent minimum response to even the most minor violations of a school’s disciplinary policy.” This disciplinary code would impose suspension upon students for “cursing” and “disorderly behavior” and would supposedly stop students from more serious, criminal like behavior in the future.
