THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA ON TEENAGERS

Abstract
The media exerts an enormous, almost a normative influence, over the lives of men, women, adolescents and children. It influences, particularly among teenagers, the ways in which individuals and groups dress, talk, behave, and think. The media, in the forms of movies, television, radio, and print as well as the new electronic communications media of the Internet, helps to connect individuals to one another and to the world. Invariably, this powerful influence shapes the ways in which viewers or participants perceive the world and their own place within that world. Given that teenagers are often highly impressionable and subject to such influences, this survey will consider the effects of media on this particular age group. Specifically, the survey will consider the ways of media influence on teens and at the end, solutions for the problems related to them. Key words: The mass media, teenagers, influence, televsion, internet, facebook, shaping opinions... REZIME Mediji vrse ogroman, skoro normativni uticaj na zivote ljudi, zena, omladine i dece. To utice, posebno medju tinejdzerima, na nacine na koje se pojedinci i grupe oblace, razgovaraju, ponasaju i misle. Mediji u formi filmova, televizije, radija i stampe, kao i novi elektronski medij komunikacije na internetu, pomazu povezivanju pojedinca sa drugim u svetu. Bez izuzetaka, ovaj mocni uticaj oblikuje nacine na koje gledaoci ili ucesnici dozivljavaju svet i svoje mesto u okviru tog sveta. S obzirom da je tinejdzere veoma lako imresionirati i da lako podlezu uticajima, ovo istrazivanje ce razmotriti efekte medija na ovom uzrastu. Konkretno istrazivanje ce razmotriti nacine uticaja medija na tinejdzere i na kraju resenja problema vezanih za njih.     The mass media plays a key role in today’s society. From the young to the old, most everyone relies upon some form of popular media for entertainment, information, communication and education. Additionally, a large part of our beliefs, values and knowledge are gained through some type of popular media. The numerous sources of media in use today make it close to impossible to avoid being exposed to its content. Whether it be newspapers, television, radio, magazines, video games, Internet or one of the many other sources, there is no doubt that the media is everywhere. Furthermore, when something is everywhere, it is certain to have influential effects. If these conditions are accepted as true, then, concluding that the popular media must have influential effects on society, must also be accepted as true. Indeed, society is greatly influenced by the media, specifically, by the values that are being portrayed. Moreover, children/adolescent teens (youth), ages 8 – 17, are the group in society most significantly influenced by media content. It is in this age range that finding individuality and a sense of belonging, or fitting in, is of utmost importance. A youth’s development is effected by what they see and hear, as well as, peer pressure. From eating disorders, behavior issues and self-doubt to teen pregnancy (sex), drugs, alcohol, smoking, and even death, the media’s portrayal of values through TV, magazines, music, and video games can have potentially devastating effects, both physically and mentally on a child. Even though the media can be a positive influence on society, for instance, by keeping society informed in a crisis situation, such as natural disasters, action needs to be taken to protect our youth by reducing the negative influences resulting from immoral and unethical media content.…

    This paper deals with the effects of the media on teen sexuality and what results from it. The sexual content contained in the media uncovers the effects on adolescent’s attitude about sex, their beliefs, and behaviors. There are so many types of media that are geared towards adolescents; it makes it hard for teen’s to ignore.     For the average teenage girl in today’s society, looking her best has become a daily obsession. To get herself prepared for the day, she would get up early to take a shower and make sure she has plenty of time to apply the necessary makeup and put on the required attire for school. To have time to do this, she must skip out on a few things, such as an extra hour of sleep and breakfast, both of which her body needs. The morning ritual is directly connected to the type of body images that is produced by the media. Teenage girls’ mindset about themselves has been altered so drastically because of the media and Hollywood’s image that is being depicted in newspapers, magazines, and television. The media is producing false body images using these movies, commercials, magazines, television, and even the Barbie doll to young and impressionable girls. Two of the most significant of these is television and advertising. There are a variety of television shows and advertisements that portray to the public that in order for them to be well liked among their peers, they must buy the clothes, the electronics, and the cars. Immediately following the turning on of the television, girls are bombarded with images of how they should act, dress, feel, and look. Girls today are convinced that if they are a size zero, it equals perfection. Television shows such as The O.C. and America’s Next Top Model only add to the bizarre skinny craze. Not only do these images affect girls’ self-image, but it also affects the way they see other girls that are around them. Teenage girls are would be less pressured to become something they are not or have good self-esteem if television shows and other forms of entertainment would limit what they are broadcasting so as not to create a false image for these young girls.…
