The aspect of leadership is based on influence and there is no yardstick that measure the inborn trait of leadership. Management and leadership are two sides of the same coin though management is characterized to meet the goals and objectives but leadership comes through charisma and biological trait. Managers must organise workers, not just to maximize efficiency, but to nurture skills, develop talent and inspire results.Chapin(1924) noted that managers facilitate, control, plan and organize to achieve their obligation. Thereforethe essay is going to adumbrate and expagorate the contestation that managers are not leaders and leaders are not managers.

A manager is person who controls the professional activities of a performer and the same time will be a person in charge of the activities, tactics, and training. Managers are mostly the directors who help to establish the cohesiveness of an organization. Warren (1989) advocated that a manager`s job is to plan, organize and coordinate. The leader is to inspire and motivate. Hence managers are not leaders and leaders are not managers.

Leadership and management goes hand in hand. they are not the same thing. But they are necessary linked, and complementary. According to “Warren” the manager administrates and maintains whilst a leader innovates and develops in an organizational field. A leader has a vision, a number of visions , or is creating visions in other words an overarching idea. Managers on the other hand, plan inorder for them to do their job well. A leader asks’s the question ,”what” and “why” and empoweringsubordinates by giving them the responsibility to do things right. Leaders therefore work with people and their emotions. On the other hand managers ask , how and work mainly with processes, models and systems. Warren also advocated that managers do things right and leaders do the right things, hence their difference. A manager accepts things as they are whilst a leader challenges the way things are. Moreover leaders are concerned with fulfilling their vision and therefore consider it natural to encounter problems and barriers that must be overcome along the way. They are generally more comfortable with risk and therefore accept that the direction needed to reach their vision is not always the easiest path. A leader can turn problems into opportunities and will happily break rules in order to get things done. Managers tend to be more focused on the status quo and will try to minimise risk. Managers have cliff role which include the general categories that are characterized of interpersonal and decisional. while a leader needs the capacity to influence others through a dynamical reciprocal covenant aimed at identifying and accomplishing collective purposes(Armstrong,2010). But however to cut the argument into a nutshell it is possible for one to be both as they influence followers to achieve objectives because they have authority and power.

Moreover, Warren (1989) also argues that managers have subordinates and leaders have followers. Managers also control a group or set of entries to accomplish a goal whereas a leader refers to an individual`stability to influence, motivate and enable others to contribute towards organizational success. So from the above it can be evidenced that influence and inspiration separate managers from being leaders.
