Hsm230 Wk 3: Leadership Styles Case Study
1. What type of leadership is practiced at NCF, transactional or transformational? How do you know?
I think the NCF uses the transactional approach in this scenario. The reason I believe that it takes the transactional approach is that this organization is much more formal and impersonal than the transformational style organization. According to Manning, S. (2003) the functions of leadership within this paradigm take place through discrete acts and behaviors.

2. What type of leadership is practiced at SSS, transactional or transformational? How do you know?
I think the SSS uses the transformational approach in this scenario. The reason I think this is the SSS seems to have a “people first” stand point. According to Manning, S. (2003) Transformational leadership focuses on engaging people through relationship; leaders and constituents, through the pursuit of goals, raise each other to higher levels of motivation and morality. Personally I think the best way to connect with people is to socialize with them so they see that caseworkers are human too. I think this method helps to build not only a rapport with clients but trust as well.

3. Which style of leadership would you recommend for a human service organization? Explain your answer.
I think the style of leadership I would recommend is the transformational approach for use in human service organizations. I think when people are on the same page and no one is acting better or superior than the clients they tend to open up and show trust in the worker. I think that when a personal rapport is made with a client they will want to be better people and want to be like the worker in regards to being successful and supporting themselves. This builds moral in the office when the clients have came full circle. We as workers are supposed to give a hand up not a hand out. When the client is given a hand up they are more confident and have a sense of self respect and pride.

The secret of why one style of leadership is better than another is still unsolved. The research of leadership style has been dominated by subordinates’ self report perceptions about the behavior patterns of their leader in interpersonal relations, decision making, instructional leadership, planning, and efficiency of management…

The two main theories I want to focus on are transactional and transformational theories. A transformational leader is one who promotes teamwork among the staff, encourages positive self-esteem, motivates staff to function at high levels of performance and empowers staff to become more involved in the development and implementation of policies and procedures (Atkinson Smith, 2011, p. 44-50). This leadership style is readily received by employees.…

In later years according to Humphrey (2014) who cites Burns (1978) who observed two different types of leader had emerged. These being transactional and transformational. Humphrey notes further observations by Avoili (2011) stating transactional leadership forms the basis of transformational leadership. However Judge and Piccolo (2004) concluded that good leaders use both styles of leadership. Looking at these two styles in more detail it can be noted that…

I would describe my leadership style as being people oriented. I think this style is very effective in my work center because it allows me to organize, develop, and support the people in my unit. It is nothing more satisfying in my day than to go out on post checks and my people are happy to see me. Its always a sense of accomplishment to know that I don't have to ask people questions to get them to talk to you on a personal level.…
