Chemical Reactions Lab
Introduction
Four different types of chemical reactions were observed in this lab. Synthesis reactions occur when two different elements or compounds form a more complex compound as shown by equation (1). Single replacement occurs when one element replaces another to form a new compound as shown in equation (2). Double replacement occurs when two different atoms in different compounds trade places with one another to form two new compounds as shown in equation (3).Combustion occurs when hydrocarbons combine with oxygen to produce water and carbon dioxide both in the form of a gas as shown in equation (4). When performing a chemical reaction, changes such as gas formation, precipitate, color change, and temperature change are observed. If any of the reactions above are observed it is known that a reaction has taken place.

Experimental
In this synthesis reaction, a small piece of copper wire was obtained. The copper wire was held with crucible tongs over a bunsen burner and the reaction 2Cu + O2→2CuO was observed. When the magnesium ribbon was ignited sparks started to develop around the top of the strip. After the sparks appeared, the piece of ribbon was placed in a dish to watch the reaction of a very bright light. These same results were achieved by our instructor.The second synthesis reaction was between a piece of copper wire and the oxygen in the air. The piece of copper wire was held with crucible tongs and held over the flame of a bunsen burner. Hypothesis: Part 1 : I believe that magnesium burning in oxygen will have synthesis reaction because the magnesium will react with the oxygen in the air forming MGO where before the two elements were separate but with added heat they have been able to become a new compound. Part 2: I believe that when the sodium chloride and silver nitrate are mixed a double displacement reaction will occur, making sodium nitrate and silver chloride because sodium is very reactive and therefore when the two elements react they will be switched with one another. Part 3: I believe that a double displacement reaction will occur when lead (11) nitrate and sodium carbonate mix because the sodium will pull the nitrate compound from the lead and the carbonate will be forced to bond with the lead. Part 4: I believe that a single displacement reaction will occur when copper (11) sulphate and magnesium are mixed because on the activity series magnesium is more reactive than copper and will therefore pull the sulphate away and bond with it. Part 5: I believe that a single displacement reaction will occur when silver nitrate and copper are mixed because on the activity series copper is more reactive than silver and will therefore pull the nitrate away and bond with it. Part 6: I believe that a decomposition reaction will occur when the pentahydrate is heated because the water will have evaporated leaving only copper sulphate without any drops of water in it.…
