How Does The Pressure By Which Alveoli Tend To Collapse
The Law of Laplace14 states that the pressure by which alveoli tend to collapse is measured by the formula: Twice the surface tension divided by radius. The smaller the alveoli, higher will be the inward pressure by which the alveoli tends to collapse.
Imagine that two alveoli are connected to the same terminal airway – as seen in Figure 5, the smaller alveoli will have a tendency to collapse and empty into the larger alveoli due to higher collapsing pressure. This collapsing pressure can be neutralized by giving CPAP.
