Many times the retailer has the policy of returning everything, no questions asked. I was at a retail outlet the other day when this had clearly happened and they even washed the clothes. A laundry detergent odor was strong on the clothes but the company had a policy that with a receipt, clothes can always be returned. This retailer marked the clothes down and resold them at a lower price.…

Interest based, principle-centered negotiation in my opinion is the correct approach in the case between the customer service rep Tina and the customer Maria. My first though after reading the situation was to put myself into the shoes of both Tina and Maria. While Tina has a job where she is to uphold the thirty day return policy, her job in no way is to insult the customer, this insult as well as the entire situation was witnessed by Joe. I believe in all honesty that Joe must handle this situation differently and cannot enforce the thirty day return policy. What Joe can do is apologize for the incident, explain the policy again and offer two solutions. The first of these two solutions could be that Maria contact the manufacturer and insist they either fix or exchange the product if it is defective or refund. The other solution if Maria is still not willing to go that route is to offer a store credit for the return. I would like to see Joe bend on the policy simply because of the insults by Tina. Had customer service not insulted the customer the policy remains a policy and can be enforced with positional bargaining, an apology for the rudeness and the fact that the store cannot honor the return because it is after the thirty days. This case with a store credit ends in a win/win situation, the product can be returned to the manufacturer or resold as a seconds on discount or however they deal with the returned merchandise, the store will also still have the fact that Maria has the credit, which is to be spent in the store in any case, so as not to lose a customer. Maria can make another purchase in the store on another item with her credit and may not discontinue being a…

Every time Christmas rolls around, I wonder if I’ll end up with one of those gifts. That one gift that was probably picked out in love, but has one problem - the receiver doesn’t like it. The hand knit sweater grandma made that wasn’t their style, the doll that they’ll never play with, the science kit that doesn’t interest them - all one of those gifts. So what are they supposed to do with that gift? It would be a waste to throw it away, but is regifting the answer? Regifting is a good choice because it would put the unwanted gift to good use, is eco friendly, and can save money.…

Research on commercial returns have shown that the reasons for product returns could be defects, product incompatibility with user needs, and deficiencies in product performance relative to customer expectations (Ferguson, Guide, Souza, 2006; Guide, Souza, Van Wassenhove, & Blackburn, 2006; Rao, Rabinovich, & Raju, 2014). However, the main reason of returns suggested by Lawton (2008) is that products are not meeting consumer’s needs. Because of the characteristic of online shopping, customers can't feel or touch the products, the product information becomes important for customers familiarize themselves with the product characteristics. Lee (2015) also indicates that one of the reasons consumers return products is “purchase with incomplete product knowledge”. He explains that when consumers encounter problems because they lack information about how to use the complex product after purchased, they will become anxious or uncertain with the purchased product and then tend to return it (Lee, 2015). However, not every customer has a perfect idea of their own…
