In 1910 Roosevelt ran for New York state senate. New York had voted Republican for many years, until Roosevelt came along and was the first Democrat to become senate in 32 years. He was offered one of his dream jobs in 1912 as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, the same job his idol Teddy Roosevelt had. Teddy used this exact job to catapult himself into presidency. Later on Franklin accepted the nomination of for vice president, running with James Cox. They were defeated by Warren Harding, but this experience gave Franklin National exposure. Later on Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio and he lost the use of both of his legs. He searched for multiple treatments but none of them worked. Franklin started to let the polio take over his life, but his wife Eleanor encouraged him to keep trying. Roosevelt then figured out how to walk short distances with leg braces and would not let anybody see him in his wheelchair. In 1928 Roosevelt ran for the New York governor and won.
