Euthanasia Is Not Murder

Mercy killing is also called euthanasia. This is a way of ending a person’s life by lethal injection or extraordinary medical treatment to the person that is suffering from an untreatable disease. It is an easy, quiet and painless death (Saunders 2007). There are three kinds of euthanasia, voluntary euthanasia, non-voluntary, and involuntary euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia is when the person who is killed has requested to be killed, and this is based on the person own will. Non-voluntary euthanasia is when the person who is killed made no request and gave no consent. Involuntary euthanasia is when the person is killed but against his or her wishes (Eow BH 2002). Now that there is four places that legal euthanasia or assisted suicide, they are Netherlands, Belgium, Oregon and Washington. Although there are some people who believe that mercy killing is not merciful and it is murder. But mercy killing can bring about many advantages such as release people from suffering, respect the living wills of a person and give the chances to other people that still have hope. First of all, mercy killing is not murder it should be practice because it can free the patient from incurable disease and also free the patient’s family distress. There are some people living in consciously or unconsciously, they are suffering from fearful pain and difficult death (Methodist Conference 1974). Patient’s will should be respect, they can choose to receive treatment or no, so they should be given the freedom to decide the value of live and death for themselves and freedom to shorten their lifetime (Dr. Meenaz M 2008). Patient that commit suicide with other people help know as assisted suicide. Dutch Supreme Court confirmed that voluntary euthanasia was acceptable in year 1984, after that adult euthanasia is the first to be legal in Netherlands.
