Essay: One Day When We Were Young
One day when we were young

As the title of this short story alludes, the theme of One day when we were young (published in Thicker Than Water, 2001) is youth, growing up and going from childhood to adulthood – or at least becoming a teenager. The story takes place in 1955 probably on the countryside of Ireland, where the author Vincent Banville is from – this is also supported by the description of the nature and surroundings, with rocks, meadows and ruin castles, and the fact that a protestant girl "trailed an aura of mystery" , since most of the Irish population are Catholics. The story tells about the main character Mickey's first experience in dealing with puberty; an eventful period containing many often confusing feelings, especially revolving around the paradoxical relationship between boys and girls, curiosity about the other sex and puppy love.

Mickey is part of a triumvirate called the Three Mesquiteers, in addition to Mickey, the group also includes Cecil Baxter and Joy Malone, and each boy has a certain role in the group, ll. 8-11:
"he [Mickey] invariably being the hero because he thought up the stories. Cecil Baxter, tall and pale as egg white, was his right-hand man, while Joey Malone, fat and roly-poly, was the bumbler of the group."

This is a good example of how people by virtue of their character, appearance or intelligence attain a natural position in a group. However, leadership is never a given, especially in periods where life and social rules are changing, and Mickey experiences this, when they start talking about girls and he doesn't have the answers that the others are looking to him for as the leader. They end up deciding to go back and spy on the girls, where they find the half-naked girls bathing in the sun. The reaction to this vision is very different for the three boys and shows a distinction in their emotional development. For Cecile and Joey the experience is merely a moment of boyish fun and they still consider girls as

In Kurosawa Akira’s film, No Regrets for Our Youth, Yukie and Itokawa are spending time with each other, after Noge had left. Once Yukie finishes playing the piano, which was to ignore Noge, she seems to out a bit out of character. She grabs a cigarette and asks for Itokawa to light it up, which he does without question. However, she moves her head away, and this is where the sequence begins. At 12:56, Yukie immediately turns to Itokawa and demands him to bow on his knees to her. This is in a medium shot, so Kurosawa can allow for the audience to know where the characters are set up in the room before he changes shots. Right after, Itokawa asks why he should bow to her, it changes into a close-up shot of Yukie now almost pleading for him to just do it. She almost does it in a way that seems innocent and sweet, but then it just turns into her demanding he do it. At around 13:20, there is still a close-up shot of Yukie, but now it becomes a reaction shot. There is no dialogue between Yukie and Itokawa, all you see is her facial expressions changing ever so slightly. At 13:48, the shot changes back to a medium shot where now we can see…

The 1920s caused many things to change. The 1920s was often looked at as the period of the American prosperity and confidence. This was time period was also known as "Roaring Twenties". Lots of things occurred in this decade. Affected by the First World War, many experts point out that Americans moved back into their way of life, many say because of the cause of the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. "The Ku Klux Klan was an extreme white supremacist secret society in the U.S" (1). Another way that many Americans were affected was because of the anti-radical hysteria of the pilgrim raids, the harsh immigration laws, and the prohibition. The Roaring Twenties was a decade of succeed and improvement in the media and technology, which all led up to the rise of new things in this country.…

Childhood is seen as a social construct by sociologists, and it is definitely not a fixed universal experience. This is due to many reasons but overall it is easy to see that not all children get to experience the same childhood and each experiences this stage of life for a different length of time. Childhood differs in many ways, in different countries, from the way they act, and the way they are treated.…

I still can recall the feeling of pure unadulterated fear, and even thinking about it now gives me that sense of dread that has become all too familiar. Every first day was slightly different, but they all had the same effect on me, the uncomfortable feeling of being on the chopping block. In four years, I have experienced the feeling of brand new faces staring at me with harsh, judgemental eyes 4 times, something most high schoolers have to endure only once, if at all. However, these four different educational institutions have brought more than just scholarly concepts into my mind. They have each bent and contorted me in ways that have forced me to learn to become inure. Each transfer required me to adapt and learn to make friends with people who were not…

The book that I choose to read this 9 week period is called Memory by Will Weaver. The book is based on the lives of a family of 4 people; Miles, Sarah, and their two parents. Memory Boy starts out in the Mid West after a mountain range in Washington erupts and spews ash what seems billions of feet up, and over the entire United Sates like a blanket. The ash is so thick that people have to wear dust masks outside to avoid the risk of breathing it in. Miles and his family finally decide to leave the town that they live in to head northwest. Since the ash is so heavy they can’t drive a car because those are restricted, and people can only use them on certain days to avoid the problem of pollution. So Miles assembles a new vehicle that he calls the Princess. It is a mix between a bicycle and a boat that they must pilot by either peddling, or when there is enough wind they have a sail from a boat to put up. They decide to leave under the curtain of night to avoid being detected by other people who would want to take their vehicle from them. As they make their way North they must face encounters with many obstacles such as road blocks, bandits, hunger, the government, nature, each other, and other hazards. In between telling us about they’re adventure north, Miles, who is the main character tells us the events leading up to their departure, starting with the day that the eruption happened. The novel starts out a peaceful journey by the family but they soon learn that their trip will not be easy and they must work together to survive.…

When I was younger, I hated my brother. I hated him so much that I would begin to sob when he simply walked into my room. He was such a bully to me. By my eighth grade year I considered him my best friend. My brother, Jacob, is eighteen months older than me and always seemed to know everything about everything. A lie told. A person accused. A life taken. Lies can be extremely harmful and hurtful. They can change a person’s life, especially if the lie is believed by the majority of people around the area. Many people who read The Children’s hour believe that homosexuality is a huge theme, and the reason behind her writing the play. However, I believe the lies told by the young girls, and I say girls because it is more than just the mastermind Mary Tilford, that set the scene for this play, not homosexuality.…

I disappeared into the land of nerds a long time ago. Of all the activities I have participated in throughout high school as a result of this, Quiz Team has been the most accepting of my quirky nature. The experience of a match is strange. The bus ride to Queensbury High, where most matches take place, is filled with jokes, trivia, and music, with Fergalicious being played at least once a night. All this, in preparation of the nerdly warfare that is to take place. But once it comes time to play, all I have is focus. My hands are tense and sweaty as I grip the buzzer, thumb paused over its button, ready to push down at any moment. The readers ask the questions and when I know the answer, I make my buzzer sound, delivering my response with a cool and calm efficiency, only betrayed when I wipe the sweat off my hands.…
