Enrique and Lourdes have different perspectives and objectives in this story. Lourdes feels she has to make a difficult decision of either being with her children and watching them grow up while suffering with poverty, or migrating to America, far from her children, and making a decent amount of money for her children and their future possibly could be brighter than hers. She keeps a long-term and bigger objective in mind, however when she does so, she underestimates the consequences of these actions at that time. Enrique has different objectives in his mind. In many ways, he is shortsighted, yet in a different way from his mother.…

In the book Enrique's Journey a young man named Enrique travels to the united states to find his mother but he’s not the only one there are many other kids like Enrique who go to the united states to find their mothers. As crazy as it might sound children and women making the trip to the united states does not surprise me.The reason it doesn't surprise me is because they make the trip out of love. I agree with the topic because the people who take the trip do for their family the people who take the trip do it because they have to not because they want to. One example of someone making the trip would be if a mother needed money for her children to eat and to get an education she might consider taking the trip to provide a better life for them. The…

Oxfam, the international charity that works to right the wrongs of poverty, hunger, and injustice, states that “The obligation of States to respect, protect and fulfil the Right to Food as a fundamental human right requires the appropriate policy initiatives. As such, its legal recognition is a necessary –though insufficient - step in its fulfilment and provides the framework for justiciability.” I felt that the human Rights issue that was highlighted in the book Enrique’s Journey was the one of the right of access to adequate food. In the book, the mother Lourdes, leaves Honduras to make the trek to illegally work in the United States and earn money to send back to her family because “Lourdes can barely afford food for Enrique and his sister Belky.”.(p20). In Honduras the world food program runs an initiative where smallholders provide food for the school meals program, providing 1.4 million school children with a meal every day. However, many young children in…

Chiapas is Mexico’s southernmost state and is known as “the beast” because of the dangers such as needing to follow the rules of not riding buses, not riding trains alone, and never trusting anyone. Chiapas is also dangerous because the trains that the illegal immigrants travel on often maim or seriously injure them, and there are many bandits hiding in the woods. Enrique learned that when traveling in Chiapas, he must not ride buses because they pass through many immigration checkpoints, riding on trains is safest when there is fog so that the immigration police won’t notice him, and don’t trust anyone because most residents of Chiapas despise the immigrants. Although the trains have advantages to other methods of traveling, they are also…

Amongst today’s society there seems to be plenty of judgment. Wherever you go it is quite easy to find someone whom will ask or tell you ‘why are you wearing that shirt’, or ‘why do you speak with an accent.’ People do not accept others whom do not fit the stereotypical American. In doing so this creates many cultural differences and problems between ethnicities. Some of these problems most definitely include discrimination which can lead to high self consciousness. Much of this judgment is present amongst both articles, The Crossing, and The Story of My Body. Within The Story of My Body, Ortiz Cofer writes about her experiences being a Puerto Rican immigrant living in the U.S., while in The Crossing, Ruben Martinez writes about being the son of two immigrants and searching for an undocumented alien, UDA, in order to question and gain information, for he is a journalist.…
