We like to think that we are in control of our lives. That, despite government and media, we are who we are, and we know right from wrong. Yet at times, we do not understand the implications of decisions made by those who have power over us. George Orwell knew this when he wrote his satirical fable, “Animal Farm”.…
One of which is a world where everyone is the same and there is no individuality. Another version of dystopia is a world where machines have taken control of all our everyday needs and are rendering human life worthless.…
While there have been actual societies which have experienced most if not all of these characteristics, the term dystopia is largely a literary term, referring to a class of literary works that serve as cautionary tales against some form of totalitarianism of the left or right.…
A dystopia is a futuristic and imagined world where the illusion of a perfect society is created by a government or some other controlling force. A dystopia is the opposite of a utopia, which is an ideally perfect world and also tries to present itself as a utopia to its citizens. A dystopian novel is a book written about a dystopia that often criticizes some aspect of modern society and usually contains at least one character who realizes what is really going on and decides to fight against it. Two good examples of dystopian literature are Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.…
"Most dystopian, classic and contemporary, points a future world that puts a twist on present society - a future world that could plausibly happen." - Lauren DeStefano. Dystopia means the place, state, and/or lifestyle that is imperfect, bad, or hell-like. In the science-fiction book, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, their dystopian society meant there was no books so that everyone was equal, but this back-lashed on them. Fahrenheit 451 had a dystopian society written to scare us and show us some of our societies biggest fears, but what if this idea of dystopia has already presented itself upon our own society cloaked to many but visible to few.…
These dystopias are a way of assessing and examining our own governmental flaws, and advancing against these flaws to ensure a healthy and safe future for our world. Daring and suspenseful dystopias, such as Fahrenheit 451, A Scanner Darkly, and Idiocracy all shine light on the danger that government control has on citizens. These shocking stories additionally help readers realize the possibilities and risks that often associate with power. Readers also find themselves more…
Dystopia is a word meaning: "1: an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives 2: ANTI-UTOPIA" . This concept has shaped the whole genre of…
In George Orwell's fable Animal Farm, the animals want equality and freedom, but is not achieved due to the nature of their human oppressors. The animals rebel and send their humans oppressors off like a herd of turtles. The pigs on the farm become the dictators, turning the farm they live on into a utopia. But over time, they do practices similar to that of their former masters, bringing the situation of the farm back to where it was originally as a dystopia. A literal revolution. Animal Farm uses symbolism, allegories, personification, and dramatic irony to show…

A dystopia is an imaginary wretched place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives, it is the opposite of a Utopia. "A dystopia is any society considered to be undesirable, for any of a number of reasons. The term was coined as a converse to a Utopia, and is most usually used to refer to a fictional (often near-future) society where current social trends are taken to nightmarish extremes. Often the difference between a Utopia and a Dystopia is in the author's point of view. Dystopias are frequently written as warning, or as satires, showing current trends extrapolated to a nightmarish conclusion. A dystopia is all too closely connected to current day society." (Dystopia.)…
Two stories that have shown significant discriptions of a dystopian society would be the novel, Farhenheit 451, and the film, The Island. As dystopian societies, they both have a protagonist who ventures out of the rules and restrictions and finds a new beginning. Farhenheit 451's protagonist, named Guy Montag, was dissapointed with his marrige, and the horrific distractions he faced throught his daily life. With no books in his society, many citizens where uneducated with the divercity of their history and their beginnings. The Island's protagonist, named Licoln 6-Eco, was tired of no answers to all his questions, and was annoyed with how his life never changed. He wanted more than just to go to 'The Island', and when he saw that 'The Island' was not real, he escaped. Bringing a friend, named Jordan 2-Delta, he faced the horrors of what the people wanted, and that was to live forever... No matter the costs and losses. Even if that loss is their own clone. Essentially, both stories withhold a substantial amount of oppressive social control, they both appear perfect but in reality they have major problems, and both storylines have the protagonist who escapes and destruction of the horrible society becomes it's fate.…
In Animal Farm, Napoleon and his followers are all animals; Napoleon is a boar (Orwell 6). All are capable of speaking English, but only the pigs are intelligent enough to read and write (Orwell 9). In V for Vendetta, all characters are human. V wears a Guy Fawkes mask for the entirety of the film and therefore appears odd. However, he is human. Moreover, citizens act in the same nature as one would expect. They are largely manipulated through the news’ use of words and dramatic pictures and videos. For instance, when V raids a news station to broadcast a message, he escapes flawlessly. Though, the news portrays a man getting shot and frames it as V’s death (McTeigue, V for Vendetta). In the analyzation of Animal Farm, one finds that animals were most likely used instead of humans because Napoleon ran a communist society. Karl Marx, who inspired the foundation of many communist regimes in the twentieth century famously, said, “The worker in his human functions no longer feels himself to be anything but an animal. What is animal becomes human and what is human becomes animal” (Estranged Labour, "Karl Marx"). However, Animal Farm is at a disadvantage as a novel because the reader must visualize the contents themselves. Moreover, it is is difficult to connect with animals in comparison to humans. Even…
Dystopia is often a society set in the future that has degraded into a repressive and controlled state, often under the control of some form of government but not always. A dystopian society can also be a planned structured society in which the conditions of life are deliberately made miserable. Some examples of these can be characterized by poverty, oppression, violence, disease, scarcity, and/or pollution for the benefit of a select minority or some unnatural societal goal. I am going to discuss how the short story “The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson and the film Demolition Man directed by Marco Brambilla exhibits dystopian.…
The year is 2085, twenty prolonged years have gone by since the explosion of the A-14 EMP device went off in earths crust surrounding the United States of America. The United States of America that is now split into two parsimonious parts, one named the New California Public, while the other the Enclave. The A-14 EMP was set of as a terrorist attack against the United States by the combined forces of Russia and China. The reasoning behind their madness was the everlasting debt the United States owed to them as the years matured. Since 2025, the United States had been fighting with themselves in a money crisis that seemed interminable. The presidential system was terminated by the year 2039, when President George F. Peterson caused another 4.2 Trillion Dollars in debt towards the Soviets. And by 2055 hints of war began to strike between United States and China. What sooned followed after was China becoming complete allies with the Russian forces. 2065 was when the devastation occurred. Every since that day the remaining creatures in the United States have fought to survive. The world they once knew has become a waring fight for survival. With the new split in the United States the people are worrying when a feud will occur, and also which side to stand for.…
