Dispute settlement of the Thailand – Cambodia Border: Dispute over Preah Vihear Temple The border dispute becomes a serious problem between Thailand and Cambodia. Both of the country claimed that Preah Vihear Temple and the area near that temple is their territory. In 1962, the dispute border between two country can be stop for a while after the International Courte Of Justice (ICJ) was decide the Preah Vihear Temple is actually belong to Cambodia. However, in January 2008, the dispute border was arising again between two countries. This is because, the Cambodia’s government initiative to inscribe Preah Vihear Temple to the UNESCO world heritage list was protested by Thailand because they was excluded in the process. The disagreement was caused the military deployment of both countries between two countries. During the government of Thailand under Prime Minister Samak Sundravej, he stated that Thailand will support Preah Vihear Temple as a world heritage but in one condition which is the unresolved area near Preah Vihear Temple must not be interfere. However, it was rejected by Thai opposition party (PAD). The demonstrated near Preah Vihear Temple and caused a chaotic. That situation was force Cambodia’s government to close the border on that area for people from Thailand. Besides, Thailand nationalist was taking the advantage from this issue to topple the ruling government under Samak Sundrajev. There are several mechanisms that chose by Thailand and Cambodia in order to resolving dispute, for example from bilateral, regional to multilateral. The escalation of the conflict took place during the Indonesia’s chairmanship in ASEAN. So, it is the priority of Indonesia to solve the problem between two countries in order to maintain the ASEAN as a region of peace.
