On the 8th of June 1913, Emily Davison died in the hospital after an accident on a horse racecourse or after trying to kill herself as some believe. Was it deliberate or a tragic accident? A plan that went terribly wrong or a death in the name of ‘votes for women’? Nobody knows for sure if she meant to take her life or if it was an accident.
A modern historian wrote some about the people’s beliefs and how some people thought or think she was trying to cross the racecourse thinking the horses were cleared off the course. There are two main theories:
1. Emily tried to kill herself for ‘votes for women’ trying to die as a martyr.
2. Davison wanted to make a protest by stopping the king’s horse but ended up failing as she died in an accident.
What if it was a mix of both? What if she didn’t intend to kill herself but if she did die she wanted to die as a martyr and for the ‘votes for women’? she could’ve have planned to protest but knew she was taking a risk and thought if she did die she would die as a martyr which she did die. She had plans in the future, she didn’t seem like she wanted to die as she said she would be at the fair every day, she had a returned railway ticket from Epsom and it was said she and other suffragettes where practising grabbing horses by their reins.
Overall, I honestly don’t think she was trying to kill herself but trying to get noticed in a crazy way. Emily must have chosen to step in front of the king’s horse specifically to be noticed. She might have not intended to kill herself but knew the risks when she did this action or
