In the book, McCullough uses sources as recent as 2004, which was one year before the book was published. While there are some new sources in the book, most of the sources are fairly old. I think that David McCullough has done an amazing job in writing 1776. It is one of the few accurate and scholarly history books that reads like a novel, which I was extremely pleased with. The authors style is easy to read in some places of the book, but more difficult to read in others. It has never been exceedingly difficult, however. In some places, like in the discussion of events leading up to action, the book can be dry, especially if there are an abundance of dates and names to remember. But in the parts of the book where there are character descriptions, or especially battle scenes, the book becomes impossible to put down. He uses such vivid imagery, especially in the battle of bunker hill and in the last chapter. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves history, or even to anyone who is an avid reader. The story really is told in such an entertaining way, you do not even have to love history to enjoy
