1. When Jane Elliott debriefed her third graders at the end of the two day exercise, what comments did the children make concerning what they had learned from the exercise?
The children were able to feel how it felt to be segregated against. One child said that he felt like he was a dog on a leash. The children learned to not judge people by their color.

(a)What feelings did they express as third graders when they were in the circle during the debriefing?
Those that that their eye color group was on the bottom felt stupid and worthless, while those who eye color group was at the top felt like kings and like they were above everyone else.

2. Notice the unexpected academic results Jane Elliott obtained as a result of this exercise.

(a) During the flash card exercise what happened to the performance grades of children when their eye color group was on the top?

The children had a significant higher grade performances when their eye color group was on the top.

(b) What happened to the children’s performance grades of children when their eye color group was on the bottom?
The children’s performance grades were significantly lower when their eye color group was on the bottom. One child mention that he was thinking about being brown eye, and felt stupid during the flashcards.

(c) What happened to all the children’s grades after the two day exercise was complete?

After the two day exercise was complete, the children’s grade maintain a higher level

    From the moment our country was created, one of the main liberties we asked for was the idea of equality, “that all men will be created equal.” Although this has been a part of the American ideal since 1776, American’s have not fulfilled this liberty. Individuals do not admit it, but many are still prejudice against minorities, particularly African Americans. In the 1960’s, around the time when Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting for civil rights for people of color, a 3rd grade school teacher, Jane Elliot, from Riceville, Iowa was busy at work in an attempt to recreate the negative emotional and physical effects of racism within her classroom. She created an experiment in which she divided her students into unequal groups as a way of creating artificial stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination. Jane Elliot eventually expanded her experiments into the adult population. She has done these experiments on corrections workers in prisons, as well as college students.     The children, specifically the blue eyed children, were immediately able to switch their mindsets and internalize that they were “better” simply because they were part of the blue eyed group. The same was evident when the teacher, Mrs. Elliot, switch the roles the following day in favor of the brown eyes. Feist and Rosenberg define in group/out-group bias as the “tendency to show positive feelings toward people who belong to the same group as we do, and negative feelings towards those in other groups.” (Social Behavior, 532) One of the blue eyed kids thought it be a good idea to make fun of the one brown eyed kid, which ultimately led to an altercation with fists, a prime example of discrimination. The prejudice element is evident through the kids’ thoughts towards the opposite colored eye kids. For example, blue kids believed they were smarter and more superior while brown eyed kids were forgetful and inferior.
