Count of Monte Cristo
King of Victory Alexander Dumas, was born and raised in France when he wrote the book The Count of Monte Cristo. He compares and contrast, the events in his story using chess pieces. For example, a pony resembles a knight, a whistle is similar to a bishop, a count is turik, and a king has all the power. The movie suggest life is about strategy, may the best man win. The introduction of the movie shows Edmond and with his best friend, Fernand , returning from the sea. Edmonds fiancée, Mercedes, utters to Fernand, "Remember when we were younger Edmond received a whistle and you received a pony" (Dumas). This resembles symbolizing how the two guys ranked each other. Edmond got the girl, Mercedes, while Fernand wanted her to himself but ended being alone. Alexander Dumas uses symbolism with chess pieces to represent victory, life, status, and revenge. Intelligence one of the key themes for the movie... Edmond Dantes an innocent young man that was wrongfully imprisoned for treason. Napoleon stopped Edmond to ask Edmond to deliver a note to a dear friend. While, talking with Napoleon he said, "We are all kings and pawns and emperors and fools" (Dumas). Napoleon was referring to how Edmond cannot read or write making him a fool. This is just like Kings rule the land , while pawns defend and retreat. Kings are well educated while pawns are poorly educated and sometimes cannot read or write.
While, in prison Edmond planned out how he would get revenge on all the people who had betrayed him, including his "best friend" Fernand. Fernand deceived Edmond wanting Mercedes all to himself. Edmond is set-up by Fernand to a wrongful sentence to Chateau Dive. Before, he was taken by Char darns, Fernand said, "To remember better days" (Dumas). He handed Edmond a King, chess piece. The chess piece represents life with all the different obstacles. Edmonds life was about to change forever. He will never have a good day again when his life is put on the line, by

When the movie opens, Fernand and Edmond had been best friends for the entirety of their youth. Yet despite this, Fernand chooses to betray his friend to gain something he selfishly wanted. In the meantime, Edmond never committed the crime he was accused of, leading him to a false sentence in Chateau d’If prison. This is like Jesus walking through his life knowing his one friend, Judas, would eventually betray him. Judas received gold for his selfish want, while Jesus was crucified for a crime he never committed. Fernand, like Judas and many people today, would do anything…

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy is an adventurous novel about Sir Percy Blakeney, a wealthy Englishman who disguised himself under the false pretence of The Scarlet Pimpernel, a brave and clever man who used preposterous disguises to free innocent French aristocrats that had been convicted and were waiting to be put to death under the wrath of Madame Guillotine. Sir Blakeney was married to Marguerite St. Just, known to be the most beautiful and smartest women in Europe, but in France she was considered a traitor for revealing the Marquis de St. Cyr and his whole family to the bloody guillotine to help her brother Armand get revenge for almost being killed for loving the daughter of an aristocrat. This act of hers disgusted Blakeney, who started showing no love for her even though he would have done anything for her. Although Marguerite still loved her dear Percy, she couldn’t help feeling that he was a pompous jerk. Sir Blakeney’s arch-nemesis Monsieur Chauvelin struck a deal with Marguerite in her assistance to capture the Scarlet Pimpernel and his league in return for her brother’s safe release, as Chauvelin had captured him. Soon after, she realized what a horrible thing she had done and repents to Sir Blakeney, disclosing all the information she knows about Chauvelin’s plan. Sir Blakeney promised to protect Armand and stop Chauvelin by sailing to France. After he had left, Marguerite found several letters in his room stamped with the Scarlet Pimpernel. She realized that he is the Scarlet Pimpernel and enlisted the help of Sir Andrew Ffoulkes. They sailed to Calais as fast as they could in an attempt to warn Sir Blakeney that Chauvelin knew his identity. Their attempt was in vein, but Sir Blakeney was clever enough to figure out what was in store for him. He escaped Chauvelin’s trap and released Armand, revealing Chauvelin as a cruel man and casting a shadow over his name and condemning him to the guillotine. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a story of…

Before his imprisonment, Edmond Dantes was what you’d considered as every parent’s dream child. He’s what you’d describe as hard-working, honest and innocent to the point that he is naive. He cared immensely for his aging father, always wanting the best for him and supplying him with love and money. Edmond admired his boss, Monsieur Morrel greatly, and he even thought kindly of the three men who clearly loath him. Everything was going swell for the young sailor as he was soon to marry Mercedes, the love of his life and had been promoted to captain of the Pharaon but that all changed when his sneak conspirators plot against him. The conspirators, otherwise known as Danglars, Mondego and Villefort’s vile actions lead Edmond down a path of 14 years in prison. During his 14 years in prison, Edmond transformed into a man filled with vengeance, hatred and hungry for revenge. He was no longer the positive and optimistic young man. This was all thanks to the great Abbe Faria, an old but wise priest who gave Edmond the most valuable gift one can receive; knowledge. With Abbe’s help, Edmond realized those who wronged him and vow to make their life miserable as they did to his. Abbe also taught Edmond skills from fencing to economics since he would need it for his journey to seek revenge. Edmond who later changed to Count of Monte Cristo, kept his bitter, cunning and cold hearted ways throughout the novel until he encountered a profound situation that left him questioning his actions. In chapter LXIX page 97, the novel stated “Since the death of little Edouard a great change had taken place in Monte Cristo. Having arrived at the summit of his vengeance after his slow and tortuous climb, he had looked down into the abyss of doubt.” The Count, obviously affected by the outcome of his actions, doubted himself and if God had really supported his revenge as innocent lives were taken. His last actions included kidnapping Danglars but spared his life as he wished to put an end to…

In clarifying the blatantly subjective nature of the term "Justice," it is easy to determine that the Count of Monte Cristo was unjust in his actions. He may have been acting out of a personal sense of justice, but was selfish and short-sighted enough to injure people on whom he did not intend to wreak revenge. His sense of justice, was not, contrary to what the term itself implied, just. The fates of, and events surrounding, Caderousse, Benedetto, Albert, and Danglars all support the charge that the Count of Monte Cristo acted unjustly.…

To seek vengeance is to inflict injury, harm, and humiliation, on a person by another who has been harmed by that person. In the movie The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond seeks revenge on Fernand Mondego for many reasons. All of which were justified because of the horrible treatment Edmond received while he was in prison. Not only did that make Edmond angry, but also when he found out the Fernand Mondego had married his wife to be only 1 month after being locked away. Being that they were friends once before made it that much harder for Edmond to believe everything that Fernand had done to him behind his back. There were lots of lies, betrayal, and false hoods as to why Edmond was even sent to prison. Throughout the whole movie everyone was told that he was dead. Edmonds approach to become revengeful toward Fernand might be criticized because many believe that vengeance has no justification no matter how the other person has harmed you.…

When it is discovered that Edmond Dantès has a letter from the island of Elba, where Napoleon is confined, to be delivered to Villefort's father. Villefort, in order to protect his own interest, has Dantès imprisoned in the impregnable fortress of the Chateau d'If, from which there is no escape. Because of his political ambitions, Villefort is willing to have an innocent man imprisoned for life. Thus, he becomes the central enemy against whom the Count of Monte Cristo affects revenge. During Dantès' fourteen years of imprisonment, Villefort uses all sorts of conniving means to achieve the powerful post of Deputy Minister of France; he becomes the most powerful law enforcement man in the nation. He also has had an affair with a woman who becomes the Baroness Danglars, and Villefort uses his wife's family mansion (Monte Cristo later purchases this mansion) to conceal his mistress while she is pregnant. When the child is born, Villefort announces that the child is stillborn and takes the child in a box to the garden, where he plans to bury him alive. However, an assassin who has a vendetta for Villefort stabs him and, thinking that the box contains treasure, he takes it, only to find that it contains an infant who is ultimately raised by him and his sister-in-law. The boy is named Benedetto, and he will later be brought back to Paris by Monte Cristo as Prince Cavalcanti and will accuse his own father, Villefort, of all of his dastardly deeds. This is part of Monte Cristo's revenge: A son whom the father tried to kill as an infant becomes the instrument of Divine Justice and accuses and destroys the evil father. The other part of his revenge is that after all the hard work…
