In Michelle Goldberg’s article “Marry or Else,” she explains how forced marriages and honor killings are not just a part of a developing-world issue. Goldberg clarifies how these types of marriages also occur in America and England. Goldberg cites examples of young women, considered children are in fact being married off to old or mature men. Many girls adhere to forced marriages because if they do not they are threatened to be financially cut off or to be dead in the eyes of their family. Goldberg reports that these girls come from the United States and England and are shipped off to a man somewhere in India that they have never met or seen in their life. Goldberg explains that the parents promise their daughter to another family to wed their…
With a median age of first marriage at 27.5 years (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2016) that is only getting increasingly later in the United States, it is no surprise why the prospect of child marriage would shock most people. Indeed, this was the case for American photographer Stephanie Sinclair, writer Cynthia Gorney, and even myself as “Too Young to Wed” unfolded. Yet, what began as outward ethnocentrism gradually shifted toward a greater sense of cultural relativism as the topic invoked a collective desire to understand the context behind it.…
An arranged child marriage is when the groom or bride have no say so in their marriage that their family members planned or agreed to. Girls and boys are affected by arranged child marriages, however girls are relatively indeed impacted the most. Child marriage has an impact on the child’s: health, education, and mentally and physical toll on the body. The health of a young bride could become very deadly…
In the United States today more than one-half of all marriages end in divorce. The purpose of this paper is to examine the reason why women have typically received custody of the children far more often than the fathers. In order to better understand child custody one must first examine how fathers have often times been left out of the picture, and conversely why mothers have had such hard times raising children on their own. This paper will first examine the perspective of a father who has lost custody of his children.…
The ethnocentric point of view of Noni’s story is horrendous. In our culture, it is considered illegal to have child brides. It is viewed as statutory rape, and child negligence. It is absurd to believe parents would basically sell their under aged children so they could find the means to feed themselves. Many child bride stories, have come to light where the victims have expressed how badly they were treated and identified with feeling like property or garbage. This can be harsh to read, but if the family doesn’t have the means to provide food and shelter to the child then why have children to begin with. Unfortunately, their government has failed them if their only option to support themselves is to sell their underage children as brides.…
In those communities, I challenged child marriage while thinking up strategies for ending the practice. This experience further inspired me to continue promoting diversity, social justice, and advocating for people’s voices to be heard. Most people do not know that socially-evil practices like child marriage exist. Consequently, there is a need to raise awareness about injustices, which begins with an effort to embrace diversity and learn about other people’s…

Growing up is far from easy, for anyone, for many different reasons. As a teenager, you begin to find your own path in this world, by figuring out who you really want to be as an adult. In many parts of the United States where teenage girls are having, keeping and raising babies is considered to be without question, the only acceptable choice; they are not given the facts about the alternative: placing one’s newborn up for adoption. There is no situation in which an unmarried teenage girl fares best by keeping her child, and in no situation in which doing so is in the child’s best interest. Also, when neither marriage or the common sense of maturity are agreed upon, parenting takes on an entirely different role for the father. Without full commitment and responsibility to either the child or the girl, he may find himself being an absent father where the word father is given to mean child support, which he can not afford and rights which he has not yet earned.…
The reasons for child bearing before marriage was something I didn't look too much into until reading this book. I realized that a whole new set of morals governs this reasoning. Mothers in poverty are usually looking at their kid as their main focus in life. Instead of thinking about the financial burden in the future, they see it as something they can deal with in the present. Many mothers get caught up in love at an early age. Irrationality usually hits when an older man with a job and place sweeps a younger girl off her feet. For many women, the man doesn't even need to be independent. They see conception as way to gain independence from family life, and will have a kid in spite.Other reasons include the rough lifestyles of these poor women. Such abuse and pain drives them to want something of their own that they can put love towards.…
The article Marriage, Poverty and Public Policy written by Stephanie Coontz and Nancy Folbre, discusses the causes and effects of child poverty. “In Canada and France, single mothers and children in general are far less likely to live in poverty. Sweden and Denmark, which have higher rates of out of wedlock births, have much lower rates of child poverty and hunger than does the United States” (2010:191). The primary causes of poverty are unemployment, poor education, and lack of affordable child care. Two-parent families are not guaranteed from the economic stresses that put children at risk, and that single parenthood does not inevitably lead to poverty. two-parent family is in poverty due to rising cost of raising children, childcare, being penalized for taking time away from job responsibilities to provide family care, lack of education, unfairly getting significantly less earned income tax credit than the single parent, and less income assistance. Public policies toward marriage should be improved; eliminating the marriage penalty on taxes or benefit reductions on low-income couples and designing better public…
As we go through life we encounter many life changing experiences. Some shape us to be the individuals we are today, while others will have you feeling like your stuck at a stand still. On January 20, 2016 I had the pleasure of meeting an extraordinary young woman who is currently managing to defy the odds as a single mother in this society. Ericka Lewis is a twenty-year-old college student who has a beautiful two-year-old daughter. The father of Ericka’s child abandoned the two when she was just four months old. Since then she has found herself fighting the storm before the calm. In Ericka’s culture it is often frowned upon to have a child out of wedlock due to religious beliefs. Not only did she have a child but she was also…
Every couple enters a relationship with the romantic dream of getting married, starting a family, and living happily ever after. Truth is it may sound all good and well however not all relationships and marriages go the distance. According to the American Psychological Association, 40 to 50 percent of marriages in the United States end in divorce (2014). After the divorce process comes the real complicated part, the child custody process. When a family separates and begins living in different households agreements have to be made regarding the welfare of the children.…
In many areas around the world such as the United States, Asia, and India, children of poor economic status suffer the painful conditions of sexual trafficking. Millions of children in a waking second suffer from the harms of sexual exploitation and face the outcomes of living life in bondage. Children, being the easier targets of the sex trade market, have suffered great issues such as sexually transmitted diseases, rape, abuse, pregnancy, drug abuse, and abduction from their families and homes. The international growth of prostituting children has robbed them of their innocence and exposes children to live criminal lives (Flowers 148). In the case of child exploitation, many organizations have united to establish and create rights for children who suffer in slavery. Organizations such as the United Nations have come together to create strategies and ways, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to help children in bondage receive freedom. Organizations such as the UN have established laws that have allowed children to come out of bondage an begin new lives. Rights for children’s education after slavery have been created to give life back to children who been taken from their home communities and have been raised in the sex market since birth.…
First of all, girls younger than 14 are getting married to men around 58 years old. In America that would be considered rape, child abuse, child seduction and many other things. The girls are barley educated and they are supposed to have sexual intercourse with a man and she barely know her abc’s. These young women get to have no life and their destiny is to be a burden to their families. Some people may say that women are just to please women and a means to an end, but it modern day women and men have equal rights.-…
