Charles Andre Joseph Marie de Gaulle was born in November 22, 1980, in Lille, France. Charles came from a Roman Catholic family, with a very long ancestry in the military. De Gaulle attended the elite Military Academy of Saint Cyr from 1909 to 1908, and then later on joined the infantry after graduating the Saint Cyr Academy. He fought in World War I, where he was wounded, then in World war II, in the battle of Verdun, where he was wounded again, and captured by the German army, and put in a POW camp, where he tried to escape several times. On August 9th, 1944 Paris was liberated by American and French troops. Charles retuned to the capital after four years of German occupation, there were various attempts from German snipers to assassinate him. After the e celebrations of the liberation of Paris were done De Gaulle was elected to head the Provisional Government. But, in 1946 he resigned from the charge of presidency of this government because he did not like the constitution of the new fourth Republic. After the collapse of the fourth Republic Charles de Gaulle returned to French politics. The Constitution of the fifth Republic was written by Charles DeGaulle and Michel Debre, and it was introduced officially on October 4, 1958. De Gaulle wasn’t declared President until December 21, 1958. De Gaulle had many objectives while he was in office. Charles de Gaulle wanted to make France a great power in Europe. Writing the Constitution of the fifth Republic was probably Charles DeGaulle’s greatest accomplishment, he left behind a long legacy like being the first president of the fifth republic and leading the Free French troops to victory in Africa and the Middle East, and later on in Europe. His dedication to his nation has always been inspiring and will always be remembered.
Years after the French Liberation, life was difficult in France. France was beginning to lose control of their overseas colonies like Algeria and French Indochina. The French were in the middle of war to hold control of Indochina, today know as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. This later on set the involvement of the United States in Southeast Asia. After this war there was the Algerian war of Independence, from 1954 to 1962, which led to the Algerian Independence and the fall of the Fourth Republic, which caused Charles DeGaulle to return to French
