The three major causes of the American Revolution were the: Stamp act, the Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts. Each one of these events had a big impact on colonial times. From putting a tax on tea to rebellious colonists, the American Revolution will forever be a part of History. The Stamp act had a very big effect on the American Revolution. For the first time in history, the American colonists would have to pay a tax that was from their local legislature. They called it, the Stamp Act. Britain imposed this tax on commonly used things such as, documents, paper goods, and similar items. This was because these things brought great success to Britain, so by taxing the colonists, they’d be able to make more profit off of it. Because of the fact that this tax violated their rights as Englishmen, this caused the colonists to become angry. They explained the Stamp Act to be “Taxation without representation.” Taxation without representation went against the English Bill of rights made in 1689, therefore, the Englishmen refused to follow this law.
Another big cause of the American Revolution was the Boston Tea Party of 1773. After the French and Indian War, King George the third and his government looked for a way to tax American colonies in order to recoup their war costs. This was because since the French and Indian war, the colonial government became increasingly independent. Therefore, the British needed a way to regain all control over the colonies. But without surprise, the colonists once again rebelled and took things into their own hand. This resulted in the Sons of Liberty dumping the 342 chests of tea into the harbor. Little did the colonists know, this even of the Boston Tea party was beginning of the American Revolution. 1. a. Following the French and Indian War, Parliament placed the Sugar Act of 1764 on the colonies to pay for the expenses of the Seven Years War. This tax on goods such as sugar and coffee created great upset among the colonists. In writing the Bill of Rights, a part of the Constitution, it is clearly stated that American citizens are guaranteed the right to trial by jury, forever eliminating the salary bonus of judges for a particular ruling. In addition, the King imposed the Coercive Acts of 1774 among the colonies. One act, known as the Quartering Act, mandated that colonists had to house British soldiers. The first justified reason the colonists had for declaring their independence from Britain was the unreasonable and unfair taxes that the British enforced directly on the colonists. George Grenville was noted in “Parliament Debates the Stamp Act” (1765), as saying “the stamp tax takes in a great degree its proportion from the riches of the people.” Since this tax came from the sale of all paper products, almost all colonists had to pay it. The tax covered almost everything from Wills to a deck of cards.
