1. To me, there seems to be only two alternatives. Either answer the “Arrests and Convictions” question truthfully with full disclosure, or not. Although Wiley’s sentence may be cleared in the future, the situation did indeed take place. An important aspect of being apart of an accounting firm is being able to trust the people you are working with, and trust that their work is being completed with competence, independence, due care, integrity, etc.. It is in my opinion that if Wiley were to pretend as if nothing had happen it would come out anyways at a later date and make him appear more guilty than he is. However, by answering the question truthfully and then scheduling a meeting with the OMP to discuss the full story, he will portray an employee with integrity and professionalism, who is trustworthy.
2. It is hard to decide how the OMP should deal with this matter, as it is a very seemingly minor conviction. However, lies should not be tolerated in a firm, as this is not a practice the OMP wants Wiley to carry over to his accounting work. I do not believe that firing is the proper way to deal with this situation. However I do believe that a strict warning be implemented, and he keeps his job conditional on the fact that he does not commit such an act again. This is important so that Wiley understands the severity of the situation and will think twice next time before he decides to leave out prudent information. I understand this is a risky decision, because the OMP and Sally do not want to promote this behavior and keep Wiley around only to find out that he has lied again, but next time in regards to his work. This would give the firm a bad name.
3. I do believe that Sally had a moral or ethical responsibility to inform the OMP of the matter. Sally is an employee of the firm and therefore is considered to be a spectator. It is imperative that employees act with integrity. If one employee observes another being unethical, it is important that they speak up to protect the firm. Employees must always safeguard a firms reputation as it is the most important asset. If Sally spoke up about the situation and Wiley had also completed the convictions answer truthfully, I strongly believe that there would be no consequences to the situation.     The history of state and federal prisons is quite interesting. Long ago, prisons did not really exist. Prisoners were housed in jails until trial, discharge, or execution. Since that time, state and federal prisons have been introduced and utilized. State prisons were the first to be invented. Prison facilities house criminals sentenced to one year or longer of incarceration, (usually felons). State prisons are run by the government of the individual state they are located in and the federal government is somewhat involved also. Over the years, the severity and number of crimes had increased, violent crimes had increased immensely. Therefore, state prisons began to have major problems with overcrowding. It was also determined that there needed to be separate facilities to house more violent and dangerous criminals away from other inmates. These facilities also needed to be more secure and protected than state prisons. Hence, Congress passed the Three Prisons Act in 1891 and the first federal prison was created and began to house federal prisoners in 1895. This first federal prison was an old military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The second prison under this act was the prison at McNeil Island in 1907. The third prison enacted under this act was Atlanta. This prison opened in 1902 and was the first prison that was built new. Since then, many more state and federal prisons have been built and opened all over the United States. As crime increases, so does the need for these facilities.…
