Am I to Be Blamed?
"AM I TO BE BLAMED?"

They're chasing me, they're chasing, no they must not catch me, I have enough money now, yes enough for my starving mother and brothers.

Please let me go! Let me go home before you imprison me.

Very well officers. Take me to your headquarters. Good morning captain. No captain! You are mistaken! I was once a good child, just like the rest of you here. Just like any of your sons and daughters. But time was, when I was reared in slums. But we lived honestly, we lived honestly in life. My father, mother, brothers, sisters and I. But then, poverty entered the portals of our home. My father became jobless, my mother got ill. The small savings that my mother had kept for our expenses were spent. All for our daily needs and her needed medicine.

One night, my father went out, telling us that he would come back in a few minutes with plenty of food and money, but that was the last time I saw him. He went with another woman. If only I could lay my hands on his neck I would wring it without pain until he breaths no more. If you were in my place, you'll do it, won't you Captain? What? You still won't believe me?. Come and I'll show you a dilapidated shanty by a railroad.

Mother, mother I'm home, mother? Mother?!. There Captain, see my dead mother. Captain? There are tears in your eyes. Now pack this stolen money and return it to the owner. What good would this do to my mother now? She's already gone! Do you hear me? She's already gone! Am I to be blamed for the things I have done?

The older I grow, the more I realize that my mother has always done so much for me. Her love was patient and forgiving in times when I pushed her to her limits as a child. I love my mother, Hester, with all my heart. I remember as a child, being fascinated with the letter A on her bosom. When I was young I was confused about the situation between my parents. I lashed out in anger towards my mother my throwing prickly burrs at her bosom. In doing so, I added to her already thriving pain and guilt. As I grew up and moved away, my mother decided to continue to live in her tiny cottage in Massachusetts. I sent her gifts from England so she can live in luxury as well. I loved her, and she knew she would always be welcome to come live with me in England at any point throughout her life.…

The next night it happened again. Putting the warm dishes away in the cupboard, she turned and saw the child's grey eyes approving her movements. In the next room was the man, his chin sunk in the open collar of his favorite wool shirt. He was dozing after her good supper. The shirt was the grey of the child's trusting gaze. She began yelping without tears, retching in between. The man woke in alarm and carried her in his arms to bed. The boy followed them up the stairs, saying, "It's all right, Mommy," but this made her scream. "Mommy is sick," the father said, "go and wait for me in your room."…

What can I help you with tonight?", asked the rotund man named Carl. His voice was nasally, and from my dad's facial expression I could tell he thought the same thing. His face was scrunched up like he had smelled something bad; he turned to me and said, "Does it look like I need any help?" I was not dumb enough to say anything to that, and apparently, neither was Carl. He slowly backed away from us until he got to the cash register, where an angry black woman started to wave a shoe in his face, saying,"These are NOT the shoes I ordered! I want a discount!" So, they aren't the shoes you ordered and you want them anyway? I literally have no words, and I always have a snarky comment stored away. Anyway, my dad looked like he was about to go on a warpath, so I decided to sit down. Meanwhile, my father decided to look at some shoes, and I started to make faces at the little Indian boy who was sitting beside me. For a moment, it seemed as if my dad had calmed down because he was carefully pursuing the shoe collection with a thoughtful, peaceful expression. Until the angry black woman accidently spilled her coffee on his…

I hope all is well at home. Tell everyone that I miss them very much. I managed to find some paper to write on so I can send you this letter. It’s cold and rainy often here and they haven’t blown the whistle in a while. I have been in the trenches for nearly a month with the British troops. It feels like I have been here for years. “I am preparing to go to the front and I am only sorry that I did not see you all before I went but then mother dear do not lose heart, I may come back again. And mother dear, do have courage. I will be alright, there are thousands of other mothers and relatives in the same circumstances and if I do die I will die with a good heart and all your love upon my lips.”1 I’m hungry all the time because food is scarce. Even when we get food, it is awful. The bread is so raw and dry that sometimes I do not even bother eating it. “This is a place to be in, we have to fight like tigers to get our food here soon as ever it comes up… some get a lot and some don’t get any. If we have money it is a hard job to spend it, if you go the coffee shop or canteen, you have to wait about two hours before it is your turn to be served. If I get through this lot, no more for me.”2 War is definitely not what I expected it to be. Death and disease is all around me and the naïve, glorious thoughts I had about war have now disappeared. “Piles of bodies lie next to me at all times, wounded, dead, or even men…

It was a cold stormy night. The house was still. I was lying in bed when I heard a series of knocks at the door. As I descended the stairs the knocks were getting louder and louder. I thought to myself, "Who could be at the door this late at night?" When I opened the door there was a tall man dressed all in black. He smelled of fish and looked like he just walked out of a mud pit. He was having car troubles and needed to use the phone. I invited him in and told him that the phone was down the hall in the living room. Instead of calling the tow truck he called his friend, George, to come pick him up. I invited him to have a cup of coffee and some cookies while he waited for his friend to pick him up. We talked for about an hour when there was another knock at the door.…
