Abortion should be illegal except in extreme cases such as rape or when a mother is in danger of dying. Many people are against abortion; which is the act of killing a baby (fetus) while in the womb. There are a few different procedures available for abortion that are physically, emotionally, and mentally harming. In the end, people will always have their own vies or opinions on abortion. Some people think that getting an abortion isn’t a problem, while others think that it’s the act of killing a human being even though they aren’t out of the womb. This paper will explain different arguments and facts of why abortion should be illegal except in extreme cases.

The two different methods of abortion are medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortions involve taking the drug mifepristone also known as the abortion pill. Mifepristone is given in the first trimester and can be used up to nine weeks after a woman’s last period. The abortion pill is very effective working about ninety seven out of one hundred times. The pill blocks the hormone progesterone, which causes the lining of the uterus to break down and results in the pregnancy to end. But, if the pregnancy continues the abortion pill can cause serious birth defects. Once your health care provider gives you the abortion pill they give you antibiotics to take after the abortion pill. The second medicine you will receive is the misoprostol, which causes the uterus to empty. The misoprostol will cause you to have cramps and bleed heavily. A lot of women abort waiting four or five hours after taking the second medicine. The side affects of medical abortion are dizziness, severe cramps, nausea, temporary abdominal pain, and mild fevers. Risks of taking the abortion pill include allergic reactions, incomplete abortion, infections, blood clots in the uterus, and very heavy bleeding. Women may choose the abortion pill because they can begin treatment as soon as they know they’re pregnant, they can complete the process at home, which ensures more privacy, usually there isn’t any anesthesia, it may feel more like a miscarriage, and the women may feel like they have more control. Before surgical abortions your doctor may give you a pelvic exam and ultrasound to find out the stage of your pregnancy. Aspiration also known as the vacuum method is when a tube is inserted into the dilated cervix into the uterus. In some cases, a curette is used to scrape the uterine lining to remove any remaining tissue. This proves that our society doesn’t really care about babies at all. Vacuuming out a gift from God proves just how unappreciative some humans are about being blessed with the opportunity to have a baby. Risks of surgical abortion include damage to the womb or cervix, excessive bleeding, accidentally putting a hole in the uterus, infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes, scarring of the inside of the uterus, and not removing all of the tissue which results in the need for another procedure. Many people have strong opinions on abortion, which resulted in strict laws for the process of abortion. “Legal approval of abortion, especially in those cases when abortion is pefromed solely because the mother does not want the child, has opened a Pandora’s box of problems and questions that involve social, psychological, and moral considerations as well as further legal issues” (Annis 168). In Oklahoma, the state requires the doctor to show a woman an ultrasound of her fetus and to describe the physical characteristics in great detail. This law also protects doctors from being sued for not telling a woman that her baby will have birth defects. In Nebraska, the state banned abortions at or beyond twenty weeks of the fetus developing inside the womb. South Dakota’s strict law requires doctors to tell women that abortion could increase the risk of suicide. While in...
