10 Things I Hate About You
10 Things I Hate About You

1. Some elements of the stills that tell us that '10 Things I Hate About You' is a teen movie are:
• Kat and Pat staring at each other – angry confrontations between two (moody) teens
• Ms Perky - disapproving or disappointed adults, most likely teachers and parents
• Cameron and Bianca together – ‘young love'
• Teenagers are predominant in all stills
• Grungy rock bands and emphasis on music – rebellion and hobbies
• The prom – stereotypical of films involving teens and high school
• Fights – both between friends, siblings and people of the opposite sex

Top left – We know that the setting is the high school prom, after watching the movie. There are bright lights and other people (probably dancing – look at the limbs in the picture) in the background.

Middle left – This still's setting is also the prom. There are bright disco lights at the back (where the rock band is). Apart from the rock band on the stage, there are other teens (who most are dressed up formally) in the background. They are dancing in couples and with friends and generally just enjoying themselves.

Bottom left – This still is set either on the balcony or in a sun room. There are large white columns (that hold up the ceiling, roof etc.), and you can see the garden. It seems to be quite a messy garden, but we can't be sure, as the background isn't in sharp focus. There are also potted plants.

Right – This still is obviously set in a school hall or office. This is obvious as there are quite dull and boring colours that most schools incorporate into their buildings and the lockers (or cupboards if this was in an office of the principal, student counselor etc.). There are a few windows and potted plants. You can also see a few items (probably personal items) on the top of the lockers/cupboards.

Serious (between Pat and Kat in their confrontation, kind of serious in the conversation between Kat, Cameron and Bianca and quite a serious scene between

The next scene shows the front of the Audi S6 in a dark garage, making it hard to see the car. The boy starts it up, and the Audi’s LED headlights light up the garage, while the house is woken by the engine’s roar. The boy smiles for the first time, and caresses the steering wheel with pure envy and a feeling of confidence. As the boy is driving towards his prom, he comes up to a red light with a limousine already waiting at the light. When he pulls up to the light, a young girl reaches halfway out the limo’s window yelling, “PROM!” The boy looks over at her, and then turns his focus back to the red light. The camera moves outside of the interior to give another view of the car as the boy pushes the pedal and takes off, leaving the limo to only appreciate the taillights.…

Mean Girls is an excellent artifact, worthy of investigation in the way that it shows how we expect teenage girls to act, but also how difficult it is for them to refrain from acting that way. When using the Marxist perspective, we begin by identifying the subject positions, as models or anti-models. Mean Girls provides clear subject positions about the models – characters that viewers are encouraged to want to be like, and the anti-models – characters that viewers are encouraged to no want to be like. Thus, the models appear to be “The Plastics”, a group composed of the three teenage girls Regina George, Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith. By analyzing “The Plastics”, it seems like teenage girls need to follow a specific pattern in order to be popular. That is to say, on a physical standpoint, teenage girls need to be thin, pretty, and wear tight and revealing clothes, while on a behavioral standpoint, they spend their time gossiping, partying, dating, and talking about boys, rather than focusing on their academic success. On top of the hierarchy is Regina George, and the two other “Plastics” are her subordinate. On the contrary, the anti-models, challenging the status quo and considered as abnormal or undesirable are represented by Janice and Damien. Both of them are belonging to the oppressed group, or the group that is considered as “inferior” and “subordinate” to the dominant group. Mean Girls depicts how easy it is for a dominant…

Jeffrey Smart’s work, The New School depicts a young girl standing alone, with dull man-made surroundings. She is standing in what looks like a school, hence the title of the piece. The girl looks sad and lonely, and we instantly assume she is new to the school; this may even be her first day. The young girl stands in the centre of the piece and has been placed in the foreground. Nothing is on either side of her, except in the background. She is standing on what looks to be a basketball court, or some kind of sporting court. In the background there are various buildings. Some are everyday buildings we can recognise; however there is a circular construction, behind the girl just to the left. To the side of this is also a playground, with three figures around it. One playing on the swings. On the other side of this circular construction is more buildings, and some bikes. This depicts a school environment. We also see buildings outside of the school which shows us that this school is in an urban environment. The colours are realistic yet this is a very dark piece. The sky is dark as well as the objects depicted throughout the work. When I view this work I am reminded of my first days at new schools. I am reminded of the fear of making new friends and meeting new teachers. I remember how scary the first day of school always was, and the anxiety caused by school.…

The Taming of the Shrew was a Shakespearean play that was written between 1590 and 1592. Set in both Padua, and Verona, Italy, the play details the “love” story of Petruchio and Katherina. Shakespeare had written the play to be a comedic piece. In 1967 Franco Zeffirelli transformed The Taming of the Shrew into a movie. Maintaining the original story line and setting, Zeffirelli worked the relationship of actors Richard Burton, Petruchio, and Elizabeth Taylor, Katherina into the comedic movie. In 1999 the Shakespearean play was transformed again and directed by Gil Junger. Junger’s movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, is a modernized take on the original play. Changing Katherina to Kat, and Petruchio to Patrick, Junger immersed the movie in the popular culture ideals of the 1990’s. Interpretations of the texts differ from person to person, this opinions will be based upon an individuals beliefs and values. I interpreted both texts to be misogynistic, although The Taming of the Shrew is more so than 10 Things I Hate About…

Although some may regard rock and roll as simply a genre of music, its emergence, in fact, caused the birth of an entirely new subculture of American youth, as well as a way of life. What was special about the birth of rock and roll music was that, unlike many other genres of music, it engrossed and caught the attention many teenagers (which were by far the most important and receptive age group at the time).[1] It formed an entirely new social category of youth (anyone between the ages of 12 and 18 years old) and would continue on to make an enormous impact on the rest of the United States of America and even the world. These teenagers all needed…

The classroom is nice and big and it’s easy for everyone to move around. Walking around the classroom everything is labeled, in the block area there are pictures of the shapes of the blocks and what shelf it belongs on. They have the art area labeled and everything is organized. The cubbies are at a height the children can take objects from, and the library has an area kids can sit down and there’s a variety of different books. “Teachers place books in an inviting, comfortable library area and in other places conducive to their enjoyment and use.” (Brederkamp, 2009, p. 167)…
