* Describe the four management functions and the type of management activity associated with it * Explain the difference between efficiency and effectiveness and their importance for organizational performance * Describe conceptual, human, and technical skills and their relevance for managers * Describe management types and the horizontal and vertical differences between them * Define 10 roles of managers perform in organizations * Understand the personal challenges involved in becoming a new manager * Discuss characteristics of the new workplace and the new management competencies needed to deal with today’s turbulent environment

Management – attainment of organizational goals in an efficient and effective manner through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of resources
Good management recognize the role and importance of other people FOUR MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS |
I. PLANNING
- identify goals for future org performance
- deciding on the tasks and usage of resources needed to attain the goal

II. ORGANIZING
- assigning and grouping tasks
- delegating authority
- allocating resources

III. LEADING
- use of influence to motivate employees
- creating shared culture and values
- communicating goals to employees
- infusing employees with the desire to perform at a high level

IV. CONTROLLING
- monitoring employees’ activities
- determining is still on target towards its goals
- making necessary corrections
- information technology (IT) helps managers provide needed organizational control without strict top-down constraints

    How does being decisive help, or hurt, conflict resolution? Should every decision be solely made by the manager? How should a manager handle criticism of his/her decisions by followers? There is nothing more annoying than a manager who can’t make a decision. If you don’t like making decisions or you feel you aren’t any good at it, you will disappoint a lot of people. On the other hand, it is preventable. Being decisive isn’t about making the right decision, it’s about making a decision. Developing real conflict resolution skill sets are a crucial part of a building a maintainable business model. Unsettled conflict frequently results in a loss of production, represses creativeness, and creates obstacles to teamwork, most importantly for leaders, good conflict resolution skills equals’ good employee retention. Leaders who don’t deal with conflict will eventually watch their good talent walk out the door in search of a healthier and safer work environment. Decisions should be made solely or primarily by considering one's duties and the rights of others? The principle of management is making decisions. Managers are always required to evaluate alternatives and make decisions concerning a wide range of matters. Just as there are different managerial styles, there are different decision-making styles. Decision making involves confidence and threats. Decision makers have variable degrees of risk. Decision making also involves qualitative and measureable analyses, and some decision makers choose one form of analysis over the other.     Management and organizations have a very close connection. Different purposes of organizations affect the different functions of management. As Naylor suggests, "Management is the process of achieving organizational objectives, within a changing environment, by balancing efficiency, effectiveness and equity, obtaining the most from limited resources, and working with and through other people" (1999:6). In addition, Bloisi denies that "An organization is a co-operative goal-realizing unit in which participants consciously enter into a mutual relationship and work together in order to attain common goals. These goals can often be best realized by means of joint rather than when individuals act alone. Thus, an organization is the 'instrument ' used to make products or provide services which meet the needs of society and of individual people."(2007: 45) From the definition of management and organization, it can be seen that management and organization are inseparable and have a close connection.
