Winslow Homer was a noted American artist during the 1800’s. He is remembered for his landscapes‚ many featuring scenes of the sea‚ boats‚ and coastlines. Homer did not receive formal art training. He began his art career as an apprentice for a commercial lithographer. In the late 1850’s he began doing work for Harper’s Weekly. His early work for Harper’s was primarily to create line art drawings from photographs. At the time pictures were printed by "stamping" them from a large wood block.

CONTEMPORARY ARTFORMS One significant piece of art work that I thought was interesting was a painting that was done by Kerry James Marshall. The title of the painting was called "Better Homes Better Garden"‚ it was made in 1994 (pg. 461). He grew up in the projects of Alabama and Los Angeles. Kelly made these series of paintings to take away any negative feedback that people had about the projects. He was trying to portray an image of piece and tranquility. I specifically like the trade marks

In his essay‚ Royalty‚ Heroism‚ and the Streets: The Art of Jean-Michel Basquiat‚ Robert Farris Thompson recounts the story of the first time he was able to watch Basquiat at work. It was in February 1985. Just before Basquiat began painting‚ he did something rather interesting‚ as Farris Thompson notes… "Basquiat activated an LP of free‚ Afro-Cuban‚ and other kinds of jazz. Then he resumed work on an unfinished collage. Hard bop sounded. Jean-Michel pasted on letters and crocodiles. He did this

Ruisdael’s painting‚ Wheatfields‚ depicts a Dutch rural panoramic landscape. The medium used is oil on canvas and the actual size of the composition is very large‚ which adds to the grandeur created through his techniques of depiction. Ruisdael painted Wheatfields in c. 1670 in the later years of his life. The organisation of Ruisdael’s pictorial space encourages the spectator to feel small. The mass of the rustic‚ realistic natural environment is encumbering‚ with the small figures of people and

For the Final assignment‚ the image I chose to analyze and critique was Girl with a Kitten by Lucian Freud. My first impression of this piece was that it was pretty perplexing. There is not much happening in it besides a woman who seems to be strangling a little kitten without what seems to be any remorse for doing so—so‚ naturally‚ I immediately had questions regarding what exactly is happening in this work. Though there is still so much to understand and comprehend about it‚ I initially

Early 19th-century painter Theodore Gericault was very fascinated by the human mind. With a family and personal history of mental illness‚ Gericault strove to depict the darker and more mysterious aspects of life in his artwork. As a Romanticist‚ Gericault attempted to communicate intense human experience through his paintings; his piece Madwoman with a Mania of Envy‚ for example‚ is one of several of Gericault’s portraits of the insane possessing a peculiar hypnotic power (Gardner 654). The Impressionist Movement‚ an art movement in France‚ lasted from around 1862-1886. It was a movement focused on color‚ light‚ and perception. In addition‚ the Impressionist painters often tended to use more distinct and free brushstrokes rather than distinct lines in their art. During this time‚ a now well-known painter‚ Claude Monet‚ was an active artist in France. What will be considered is whether Monet should be judged an authority on Impressionism. The obvious answer appears to be “of course”

Even the most objective artists can only paint themselves. Whether city streets or poetry‚ inherent in any creation there is this inclusion of the creator’s values found somewhere in the work. With enough scrutiny‚ the minds of the artists can be unwoven. Extrapolating this analogy to ancient cities like Teotihuacán‚ Mayan values and points of cultural emphasis can be derived and stitched together to form a more tangible understanding of who these people were and to which gods they prayed.
