Speech Tips
I hate being nervous when speaking. I would make sure that I had an ample supply of water available to soothe my ever-drying mouth; I would make sure that I had a portable microphone so I could walk around to minimize nervous energy. I would know my material like the back of my hand, by doing so I will come across as professional. I would arrive early to the location to where I am giving the speech. I will arrive early and walk around the room including the speaking area. I could stand at the lectern speak into the microphone; maybe walk around where the audience will be getting a feel for the room. If possible, I would greet some of the audience as they arrive and chat with them. It is easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers. Choose one member of my audience and dedicate my whole presentation to him or her. Just assume that not everyone else is paying attention. When someone asks me a question, change your focus to that person and answer the question as if the two of you are in a coffee shop chatting away. Isn’t that the most relaxing way to handle a crowd? I think these are some good ideas to get over being nervous. I scored higher than I thought I would, I know paying attention in a meeting or at a conference is rather easy but sometimes, the most insignificant things can distract me. I have seen many excellent speakers on the TED talks. A good speaker makes a considerable difference when someone is passing on a good amount of good quality information. I know if a speaker is not prepared and has a hard time, getting his point across, I can really become distracted or even uninterested. I remember learning how to be a better listener when I was in Boot Camp. The drill instructors really reinforced their techniques to make sure each series of Marines learned exactly what it was to become better than the class before you. Those methods would seem harsh and barbaric to those who would be looking from the outside but at the time, it made

-Focusing on Your Audience: The more you know about your audience and how they will respond, the more comfortable you will be. Look for feedback from audience, this will take the focus off your own anxiety. -Focusing on Your Message: Like focussing on your audience, it keeps you from thinking too much about how nervous you are. What I did find out though is that I can improve in so many aspects. Although it won't be easy to just stop being nervous out of nowhere I can improve by rehearsing more as well as preparing more for the next speech. Rehearsal is a really important factor in speech delivery and it is one of the main steps to achieve confidence. Delivering a speech can be really easy, but many factors actually contribute to it. What I need to do next time is rehearse everything well. I have to be able to organize my speech in a way I feel comfortable presenting and in ways it is easy for me to recall the information while I am giving my speech. What I really need to work on is my speech delivery. When I present my next speech I can't seem nervous. I need to have pleasing facial expressions and body movement where it seems i’m comfortable and confident with what I am saying. I have to get over my anxiety with presenting. I can't stress enough how much I have to rehearse. With that in mind everything else will just fall smoothly with presenting the information, as long as it is reliable and interesting…

Attention- getter: What would you do if somebody came into this classroom and pointed a gun at you as if they were going to kill you for no reason? First thing that would come to mind is, “Am I really going to die right now” and “Why is a person on campus with a gun trying to kill people?” Sad part is, an event like this has happened many times in the past. For instance, the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting as well as the Colorado movie theatre shooting that all took place within the past year[example]. These mass shootings have brought up the issue of controlling who is able to purchase guns and if it is safe and necessary to roam around in public armed with a weapon.…

Hoverer, my research provided some great strategies that will assist me in managing speech anxiety when I speaking to a group. Firstly, it is critical for me to examine myself to Identify the cause of my nervousness, and after I determine the causes I must consider the reason these things make me nervous during a speech or presentation. Also, it will be essential for me to prepare my speech early and thoroughly. Preparing a speech at the last minute will only increase your anxiety. After I had prepared my speech, it important to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! I’ll have to practice delivering my speech multiple times before the actual presentation. This will allow me the opportunity to organize the main points to avoid losing my place. This has happened to me often and it creates an awkward silence. Also, extensive knowledge of the topic will be…

When the fear of public speaking is present, it is overall easy to overcome. The article How to Conquer Public Speaking Fear, written by Morton C. Orman, M.D. explains how practicing the ten principles with practice can help you overcome public speaking fear. Principle 1 states that public speaking is not inherently stressful, although thousands of human beings have learned to speak without stress, I disagree that I’ll ever have the feeling of having little to no stress when it comes to public speaking. Principle 2 states that you don’t have to be brilliant or perfect to succeed. I agree with this principle because at the end of the day people are looking for something of value from your speech. Principle 3 explains how you only need two or…

Introduction: College. The place where it can make you or break you. We can all relate to being excited, nervous, and scared all at the same time once we got to Texas State. We were no longer big bad seniors walking the halls of high school, but scared little freshman walking around this University looking for our class and at one point getting lost. We are all freshman in college, and although we’ve already been here for about 2 months we sometimes still need help on specific things. Although we are currently going through our first semester and only need five more weeks to finish we still need some advice. Even though we don’t want to admit it we all want “tips” on how to survive freshman year in college. I’m a freshman so I’m not saying that I’m an expert at this but from researching information and talking to some friends and family that have gone through their freshman year in college I can share some tips with you that can hopefully help throughout the year.…

The next area that I need to work on is my confidence level. I just don’t feel very confident preparing for or delivering speech, yet. I believe something that would help is just to have a positive attitude and to quit telling myself that I can’t do it! I can do it, I just need to believe that. One of the things I might do is pick out three people whom I’m comfortable with in the classroom audience in different areas of the room and just focus on those three people during my speech. To the audience, it will look as though I am scanning the room when in reality I’ll be just looking at the same three people. I think this will encourage myself to reframe the... [continues]…

Many people tend to feel nervous when speaking in front of a group. Everybody has nervousness, from professionals to students. Some nervousness when speaking in front of a group is not only inevitable, it’s also desirable. If it can be controlled, your nervousness can be transformed into excitement or enthusiasm, and that makes for a presentation that is exciting and interesting to the audience. Being too nervous can take away any pleasure that doing the presentation may give you, but it may also have a negative effect on your performance.…

I knew this day would come sooner or later. A month ago I saw the nicely printed black letters that spelled “Speech” on my class schedule and a feeling of anxiety overcame me. My stomach felt as if I ate some bad leftovers and my heart was ready to come out of my chest or mouth whichever came first. I certainly thought I had enough time to mentally prepare; but here I ‘am wishing I were the invisible woman.…
