The analysis emphasizes an integration of language and literature and draws upon theories developed in the general field of cognitive poetics/stylistics (Stockwell 2002; Gavins and Steen 2003). For the purposes of this research, using Stockwell’s model of Deictic Shift Theory (Stockwell 2002: 45-49), the analysis will investigate Chopin 's use of different types of deictic expressions and shows how such use guides the reader to be involved in the text world(s), leading to a better understanding/exploration of the characters and themes. The analysis reveals how the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard, searches for identity, freedom and the bright future after the husband’s death. This paper attempts to explore the

A dynamic character is a major character in a work of fiction that encounters conflict and is changed by it. In “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, the emotional pattern and thought process of Louise Mallard after she is informed of her husband’s death are explored. Over the course of the hour in which the story takes place Louise has a realization about the constraints she feels in her life and in her marriage. By delineating Louise as a flat and dynamic character, Chopin is able to convey her theme that real freedom is found in death.…

Kate Chopin invokes different emotions for the reader throughout the story. In, “The Story of an Hour,” Chopin uses suspense as a method of anticipation when Mrs. Mallard goes to her room alone. What is she doing? What is she thinking? What emotions is she feeling? What thoughts are racing through her mind as she leaves her sister and Mr. Richards downstairs? The uncertainty and anxiety of Mrs. Mallard raises questions in the mind of readers about how they would react if they just heard a loved one died. Kate Chopin was a very important author during the nineteenth century. Her writing was criticized for much of her lifetime; it emphasized women’s rights, freedom from servitude, and need for independence. Her work, “The Story of an Hour”, like many others supports these ideals. In Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, the author uses irony, tone, imagery, and characterization effectively to help support a theme of the importance of independence.…

Several symbols in Kate Chopin's "Story of an Hour" create a feeling of comfort, wellness, and wonderfulness within the reader's mind. The first symbol I will speak of is the "comfortable chair" which she sinks into after the news of her husbands' death. Then, I will speak of the open window, which she sits in front of through which she sees many symbols of things that are good. Finally, I will speak of the description of Mrs. Mallard herself and her comfortable situation, which will tie together all the symbols that create the feelings of comfort and wellness in the reader.…
