A School of Consistency
Parmenides was known best for the idea that nothing ever changes at all. He believed the exact opposite of Heraclitus. He also said that all changes are just an illusion and they cannot be proven to be real. I agree and disagree with Parmenides’ ideas about how nothing ever changes. I agree in the sense that there is enough continuation of identity to say a school is the same school. But, I also disagree about how he states that the universe consists of one thing and that all changes are illusions. I think that although changes occur there are things that will keep the continuation of a school’s identity. A changing phenomena like a school being completely torn down can meaningfully retain the same identity across the changes by keeping the same name, location, mascot and school colors.
I went to Linganore High School for four years. My high school got torn down completely after freshman year, mainly because it was a very old building, and then it was rebuilt from scratch. The school had changed in every way possible except for the name, location, mascot, and school colors. I believe that these items together create the continuation of identity for a high school. The name of the school to me is a really important characteristic that applies to the continuation of the schools identity. The name makes it different from every other school in the sense of how we refer to the school. Also for example every person has their own unique name although there are many people with the same name this is still a main factor in creating their own identity, which doesn’t change because they will always be the same name.
The second reason why the identity of the school will still remain the same is the location of the school. The location of the school is how you know which school is where. For instance Linganore High School will always be on the same road in the same place. If the location is moved then it takes away from the identity of the school.
