A Lesson Before Dying: Book vs. Movie
In a lesson before dying, I noticed many differences between the movie and book. In the book the superintendent went to inspect the children but in the movie the part was not shown, in the book it was Miss Emma's idea to bring the children in the day room but in the movie it was Grants idea and lastly in the movie they didn't show the several visits between Jefferson and Grant before he began to open up.
In the book, Grant awaits the annual visit by the superintendent. He makes sure that his students appear clean and well behaved, since the superintendent could arrive at any moment. Dr. Morgan calls up several of the boys and girls, choosing the most obviously self-conscious or problematic students. He checks their teeth and asks them to recite Bible verses. He gets angry when one young boy fails to recite his lessons properly. Grant thinks of the similarity between Dr. Morgan’s inspection and slave masters inspections. Furthermore in the movie none of this shown, it skips this part completely.
In the movie, it was Grants idea to have Jefferson in the day room and have the children from the school visit him for the last time. The children gave him gifts and some even gave Jefferson hugs. Miss Emma cried while witnessing all of that happening. In the book, it was Miss Emma's idea to bring Jefferson into the day room.
Lastly, in the movie it only takes Grant a couple of visits to convince Jefferson to open up. But in the book it took many sessions in order for Jefferson to open up to Grant. Soon after Jefferson was comfortable around

When Grant got there he asked Jefferson if he wanted any of the food Grant brought he answered but not in a way anyone would expect. He asked Grant is he brought any corn, Grant said no and then asked why. Then Jefferson replied it was what hogs eat and got on all fours and ate from the bag of food as a hog would. Jefferson was convinced he meant no more than a hog to anyone. The racism in the book affected Jefferson’s head dramatically.…

    Racial injustice surrounds Grant and Jefferson along with their friendship. When Miss Emma is trying to convince Grant to visit Jefferson to help him become a man, it shows how racial injustice will bring them together. “‘I don't want them to kill no hog,’ she said. ‘I want a man to go to that chair, on his own two feet.’”(13). The racial injustice in this era eventually brings Jefferson and Grant together and betters their relationship. He turned his head and began staring up at the ceiling again.”(74). Racial injustice affects Grant and Jefferson’s relationship very negatively when it is forming. Jefferson feels mistreated (and he is), so he takes out his anger towards Grant, making a friendship hard to form.
