A Laptop Computer Is a Personal Computer
LAPTOP
A laptop computer is a personal computer for mobile use. A laptop has most of the same components as a desktop computer, including a display, a keyboard, a pointing device such as a touchpad (also known as a track pad) and/or a pointing stick, and speakers into a single unit. A laptop is powered by mains electricity via an AC adapter, and can be used away from an outlet using a rechargeable battery. Laptops are also sometimes called notebook. computers, notebooks, ultrabooks or netbooks.
Portable computers, originally monochrome CRT-based and developed into the modern laptops, were originally considered to be a small niche market, mostly for specialized field applications such as the military, accountants and sales representatives. As portable computers became smaller, lighter, cheaper, more powerful and as screens became larger and of better quality, laptops became very widely used for all sorts of purposes.
History
As the personal computer (PC) became feasible in the 1970s, the idea of a portable personal computer followed. A "personal, portable information manipulator" was imagined by Alan Kay at Xerox PARC in 1968, and described in his 1972 paper as the "Dynabook".
The IBM Special Computer APL Machine Portable (SCAMP), was demonstrated in 1973. This prototype was based on the IBM PALM processor (Put All Logic in Microcode or 128 bit).
The IBM 5100, the first commercially available portable computer, appeared in September 1975, and was based on the SCAMP prototype. As 8-bit CPU machines became widely accepted, the number of portables increased rapidly. The Osborne 1, released in 1981, used the ZilogZ80 and weighed 23.6 pounds (10.7 kg). It had no battery, a 5 in (13 cm) CRT screen, and dual 5.25 in (13.3 cm) single-density floppy drives. In the same year the first laptop-sized portable computer, the Epson HX-20, was announced. The Epson had a LCD screen, a rechargeable battery, and a calculator-size printer in a 1.6 kg (3.5 lb) chassis. Both

The 1960s was the most productive period for creating the modern computer (Barnes, 1997). By definition, a computer is a device that performs calculations and processes information. The first modern computers were very large, often filling up an entire room (Barnes, 1997). The 60s was a decade to introduce many advances in computer technology. In early 1960 digital equipment introduced the first minicomputer, named PDP-1, priced at $120,000 (Whithaus, 2004). PDP is the acronym for Program, Date, Processor and was the first commercial computer equipped with a keyboard and monitor (Whithaus, 2004).…

Computer Hardware originated from the 1960’s is marked by the conversion from vacuum tube to solid state devices such as the transistor and later the integrated circuit. By 1959 discrete transistors were considered sufficiently reliable and economical that they made further vacuum tube computers uncompetitive. Computer main memory slowly moved away from magnetic core memory devices to solid-state static and dynamic semiconductor memory, which greatly reduced the cost, size and power consumption of computer devices. Eventually the cost of integrated circuit devices became low enough that home computers and personal computers became widespread. In the third generation the mass increase in the use of computers accelerated with computers. These generally relied on Jack Kilby’s invention of the microchip, starting around 1965. However, the IBM Systems used hybrid circuits, which were solid state devices interconnected on a substrate with separate wires. The first integrated circuit was produced in September 1958 but computers using them didn’t begin to appear until 1963. Some of the early uses were in embedded systems, notably used by NASA for the Apollo Guidance Computer and others. While large mainframe computers such as the System increased storage and processing abilities, the integrated circuit also allowed development of much smaller computers. The minicomputer was a significant innovation in the 1960s and 1970s. It brought computing power to more people, not only through more convenient physical size but also…

Laptops can be vastly adaptable and beneficial, as far as being portable and having all the components built into the computer like the mouse, speakers, monitor, modem, and the camera. On the other hand, with desktop computers all of the components must be plugged in and even some components must be bought separately. Another thing about laptop computers is that they can be wireless, to the extent that your able to use the internet and also not have all the cables connecting your accessories and making a mess. With desktop computers to use the internet you must have an Ethernet cable connected to it or a phone line.…

Technology is constantly changing. The 1st laptop was introduced in 1981 by the Osborne Computer Corporation. This technological phenomenon changed the way we would use computers forever. For the price of 1800 dollars, you could own an Osborne 1 laptop. It included about an additional 1500 dollars worth of programs such as WordStar word processing, spreadsheet software, Microsoft MBASIC programming language, etc. It weighed about 24 and a half pounds and also included a protective case. In 1991, the Apple Company introduced its version of the laptop. The Apple PowerBook was portable, which included a palm rest and pointing device that became standard for future laptop designs (Carey, Dachary). A major change to the laptop industry was the release of Windows 95 in 1995. Windows 95 became the default operating system for non-Apple laptops. The release of Windows 95 stabilized several features of laptop design, and brought about the creation of the style of laptops we know today. (Carey, Dachary). As shown in table 1.4, the amount of shipments, imports, exports, and annual growth has changed over the past few years. Important industry statistics related to the laptop industry would be income and demand. These statistics are important because the purchasing consumer has to be able to afford the product and additional accessories for the computer. The American economy is becoming better so that when consumers are more…

Then came in the laptops, notebooks or mobile computing which took technology a step ahead. It’s fair to say laptops have come a long way since the early 1990s, LCD displays have been replaced with sleek HD screens and the once plus-size machines are now zero sized models. If laptops have evolved so much in that space of time, where can they go from here; especially in this so-called post-PC era where tablets PCs are all set to take over computing world?…
