A Hidden Beauty
Edsel Ryan Superada

A Hidden Beauty A legend of an ugly princess hidden in a cave by her royal parents to avoid embarrassment as cursed by a enchantress. When the child grew up, she came out of the cave and became amazed at what she saw. The enchantress, who cursed her parents, saw her and made an offer to transform her into something of great beauty and splendor. She accepted the offer and became the Tinago Falls. The City of Iligan, a city where most of my childhood summer is spent. We usually called it the city of waterfalls, a city where you can see the beauty of a nature in every spot of the town. Almost three hundred kilometers from the City of Butuan where my hometown is, average of seven hours travel, and two hours trip from Cagayan de Oro. Iligan is a place where I can see a city that is neighbored by a green and foggy mountains. Iligan is known of its waterfalls especially, Maria Cristina falls. But for me, the only falls that makes my heart melt of its beauty is Tinago falls. Tinago is a Filipino term meaning "hidden", the falls being hidden in a deep ravine. Trekking to the falls requires approximately five hundred descending steps called the winding staircase. The falls is high, its very cold waters cascading beautifully into a deep and calm basin-like pool which appears like a green-colored lagoon. Under the falls is a small cave where people can enter and listen to the rumbling waters. I liked where it is, down a mountain top. I love the stair made ladder going down and up. I love the cool spring water falls from above. The rainbow site you will see as you go under the falls. You can't stop smiling even with the tiring experience of climbing down and forth the hill. Sweet remembrance as you recall it. From the top of the falls you can hear the cry of the forest as the waters blaze your sight where the force of nature roughly falls down into the green deep lagoon. The rough waters slowly calms down and brings a sweet singing of music by the

This photograph captures the notion how waterfalls are timeless. You can stare the falls for hours, and every moment feels like the last. As the water transcends down as captured by the photograph, a setting of Zen is created in essence. The photograph, captured in black and white, is contrasted in order to emphasize certain aspects of the picture and to draw in anyone who lays their eyes on it. Furthermore, the photograph’s size does not represent its vastness. As I mentioned before, an observer cannot understand the impact of Niagara Falls unless they view it in person. But, I feel if the picture were blown up, it would only help how powerful the image of the falls is.…

Some people enjoy the beach, others enjoy the mountains, but my favorite place is Branson, Missouri. Imagine peering down from the dock into a body of water in which you can see every little detail as it descends toward the bottom. You look up and see the cascading Ozark Mountains as if they were part of the border of Mona Lisa’s frame. A hush and peace unlike any other overwhelms you. You can hear the calming sounds of nature as an underlying harmony to that peace. The birds croon soft tones as the water flows softly past the dock. As the morning begins, a cool breeze floats off of Table Rock Lake giving the sensation of Fall no matter what time of the year it may be. Your stomach begins to growl as the smell of fresh baked…

“And on your left you’ll see one of the tallest waterfalls in the world” the train conductor announced. Everyone shuffled for their camera to capture the moment. As the scene came into view the cog train was filled with the sound of a disappointed gasp, followed by glances to the vested instructor that read ‘are you kidding me’. The “waterfall” looked more like a miniscule stream than a massive landmark he told us it would be. Because we were near the top of Pike’s Peak, he wasn’t completely wrong. We were expecting something the size of Niagara Falls.…

Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, the girl who finds her prince with the help of a magical fairy god-mother, transforming her previously horrible life to a fabulous depiction of every little girls dream. Generations of children around the world have heard the story Cinderella countless times, however most people are unaware of the multiple versions of this legend. The European version of Cinderella ,“Aschenputtel” written by the Grimm Brothers consists of the female protagonist being treated as a servant, yet somehow manages to leave her cruel family behind for her Prince whom she lives happily ever after with. Another version of Cinderella is the Native American tale “The Algonquin Cinderella”, where the female protagonist is also mistreated by her family, however she is fortunate enough to “find” her own prince in her village. Although both stories present similar morals, both vary in details such as characters, settings, and use of magic.…

The story begins with the birth of Princess Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee who does not open her eyes for three days until welcomed by her aunt who is able to converse with animals. Like many other stories, the heroine is unlikely: quiet, shy, timid, and anti-heroine. One of the biggest accomplishments for this story is that it just keeps changing from what you expected. The story looks so planned out and then it suddenly chanes from what you thought or expected.…

As I entered the hidden destination, there it lay, a massive 70 foot tall waterfall. The water was rushing down the smooth side of this massive stone. Trees were hanging over the sides of the waterfall as if they were staring at their death. I was frightened to do what I was about to do, but instead of pondering the situation, I threw on my swimming trunks and made my way over to the base of the deleterious waterfall. I grabbed a rope that was on the side of the waterfall, covert in some bushes.…

    THE LOST BEAUTIFULNESS

After reading this story, the only sympathy I have for any of the characters would be for the Hanneh Hayyeh’s husband and son. Her husband works hard to pay for bills and to put food on the table. Sure Hanneh works as well but she should help out with the bills instead of saving money to paint her kitchen. Her husband stated, “But you had ought save it up for the bad times. What’ll you do when the cold weather starts in and the pushcart will not wheel itself out?” (Yezierska, 1920). That tells me that they are not in great shape financially. I also feel sympathy for her son, after fighting in the war he comes home to find his mother in the street with all of the family’s belongings. Instead of enjoying his 24 hours of leave he now has to deal with his homeless family and assist with them finding a new place to live and help them move. This story had no appeal for me whatsoever, I feel that Hayyeh ruined the story for me. Granted she was the main character, but she was the character I disliked the most. Granted she painted the kitchen as a tribute for her son, I can respect that. She didn’t have to show every Tom, Dick and Harry the work she did. Because of that she set herself and her family up for failure. Being a military man, I did find interest with her son serving in the war. Yezierska does talk about a relatable event, when people do home improvements or purchase a major item, they want to show it off. To have that sense of pride of ownership, a status quo. I believe that epiphany is demonstrated by Hanneh’s worshiping of her new painted kitchen. It is all she can talk about and wants to show everyone how glorious her kitchen looks now after she painted it. She wants something special for when her son comes home from the war. When in all reality, the son will probably be happy just to be home. He doesn’t need a fancy painted kitchen, just his family and friends to welcome him home (which he doesn’t seem to…

Next, we visited Intramuros where I saw Rizal’s footprints. I still tried to follow those metal footsteps, and as I went farther, I realized all his efforts just for freedom to reign in our poor country. I knew that with each step, are his hardships and dedication for the betterment of the future Filipinos— us. It was a unique experience walking in a historical venue where many not so good happened in the past for many lived and died there during the colonization times. Upon entering, the first thing that attracted my attention was the beautiful park. In the middle, there’s an oasis of spring water and palm trees. Old ruins, canons and guns also surround the big courtyard. On the left side from the entrance, there are war machines that were used in the World War II before. After crossing the channel, there’s a smaller courtyard, considered as one of the beautiful gardens in Manila, where one can peak the magnificent view of the Pasig River…
