Women In The Chrysanthemums

Both Steinbeck and Hemingway were some of the greatest literary writers of their time. During their time, it was an age of great civil injustice and woman’s suffrage being at their height. In which both show similar interest in how woman are being portrayed and their roles they played throughout the 20th Century. As such in the short stories as “Hills like white Elephant” by Hemingway and “The Chrysanthemums” by Steinbeck the struggle and the roles women played. And in each shows the similarities and the differences that came with the portrayal of woman during the 20th Century.
In many ways the roles of woman were just kept as being housewives or mothers in charge of managing the children while the men tended to the fields or to the factories to provide for their families. And both Hemingway and Steinbeck tend to portray woman similarly, for example it can be seen in “The Chrysanthemums” and “Hills like white Elephant”. In the short story “The Chrysanthemums” the main protagonist Elisa was shown at the beginning of the story tending to her garden as a man in a wagon came upon her farm. At first she was irritated by the man but when he asked about the Chrysanthemums she was
But as they talk about it, the woman becomes more disheartened and basically concedes to her boyfriend. Showing how that woman didn’t really have a say in their relationship. At which we could infer that they were going to go their separate ways even if they had the operation or not. As she struggles with her relationship with him trying to be happy with him but can’t come to terms that their relationship has already ended that it was a matter of time before she decides to leave. As such both show similarities how woman face limitations on how what they can or cannot do in their day and
