Wind Music Concert Essay
The concert was a symphony Band, and Wind symphony. The concert was attended in Paul F. Sharp concert hall at Stanly B. Catlett. However, The concert conducted in the 15th, Oct 2015 at 8:00pm. The first piece on the program was Second Suite from the twentieth century period. Also, it consists of four movements of different speed and style. However, the first movement titled is March and the speed of this movement was Adagio in general but it contain fast short note that is different in speed and it gets slow when the play solo instrument. The rhythms of this movement contain a combination of solo trombone, which have the main melody and drum at the back. The timber of this movement is brassy. The second movement is titled Song without words, …show more content…
The timber was worm, and smooth. Moreover, the texture of this movement is likely to be homophonic because many note and the main instruments were the woodwinds that have the main melody. I enjoy this movement Precisely because it is more emotional; they end this movement with slow short solo woodwind instrument. The third movement of this piece was titled Song of the Blacksmitb. The speed of this movement was Moderato, which makes it faster than the firsts movement; also it has some fast note. In this movement the timber was between brassy and harsh. Addition, in this movement all the lines was played at the same level since it very short movement, that makes it polyphonic. Nonetheless, the forth and the last movement of the first piece was titled Fantasia on the Dargason. This movement started with solo French horn. This movement has combination of the texture the monophonic and the polyphonic because there was some notes that the entire instrument played at the same level, on the other hand, there some note that one instrument has the main melody. Moreover, in this movement there were two times when they play solo the first combination the French horn that has the main melody and the tuba, the second combination was the piccolo with trombone. At the beginning of the piece for the first time the conductor gives a speech the music players how the are very busy this period, then he thanks the audience and appreciate them because they were very good listener. After that, he gives a little of background about the piece. Furthermore, this piece begin with a unique combination which are the oboe with has the main melody, piano, and glockenspiel. The oboe player was very professional I can see how he engaged with instrument while he playing the oboe. However, the guiro is the first time I see it astonished me it has very unique sound I can recognize it between many instruments and it gives amazing tone to the rhythm. The rhythm of this piece is predictable. This piece is consonant even you can dance with the rhythm, after I listen to the piece I understand what the conductor mean when he says jokes in his speech about dancing in the aisle. Additionally, there was a solo piccolo it was very nice. However, I notice that at the end of every piece the conductor will make some players to stand up I think it mean that play very good then will let all the group to stands up. My favorite piece was Redwood from the twentieth century period. Before they begin there were some arranges and changes to the stage and they add and remove some instruments. This what makes enjoy this piece when they start the piece with an ordinary

    The first movement of the composition begins with a solo from only the strings family. A soft, consistent melody is played and the violin dominates the other instruments in this piece. The tone color at the beginning of this piece is relatively light which symbolizes the characteristics of a nuturing mother.     The Rhodes College Orchestra began the evening with the Palladio by Karl Jenkins. The Palladio had three different movements. The first movement, the Allegretto, started steadily with the double bass, violoncello, and viola. Then, the tempo became faster and the music more intense, with firm bow strokes from the violin. Throughout most of the movement the rhythm was fast, though there were a few measures where the rhythm slows gradually, but only lasting briefly before it revives again. Towards the end, the mood became lighter and more cheerful, leading the piece to a strong and bold ending. The second movement, the Largo, began quietly. The tempo was slow throughout this movement. The melody was quiet during most of the movement, thus making the vibrato more prominent. The music was loud at the center of the movement, but started to get slower and quieter when approaching the end, letting the ending gently fade out. The program was part of San Jose State University School of Music and Dances performances Spring ’16. There were two conductors for this performance, Dr. Edward Harris was the director as well as the main conductor of this performance, and the graduate conducting associate Paul Herrea. In this ensemble, there were two percussion soloists by Professor Galen Lemmon and Anne Hsu, an alumni from SJSU.     To introduce the piece two cadenzas inspired by the same melody are performed over a continuous subtle harmony. The piece begins with sustained chords between the string instruments and wind instruments. This gives a relaxed effortless tone to the piece and resembles the calmness and tranquillity of a spring day in England. The violin then enters imitating the lark. The violin plays an ascending pattern with elongated arpeggios. The chords underneath drop out so the violin plays a solo introducing the first theme. The orchestra is quietly introduced and develops the almost folk like motif. A folk dance theme is then introduced led by the clarinet and flute and woodwinds as the solo cadenza is repeated. The full orchestra then comes in however it is still fairly restrained to imitate the English countryside. There is antiphonal exchange between the solo violin playing a trill and then the woodwinds imitating the bird like call. This is followed by the solo violin playing a series of cadenzas over the orchestra which could represent the lark flying over the countryside and rolling hills. The shorter cadenza for the soloist is fairly contrasting in comparison to the rest of the piece. There are two separate melodies competing with one another yet also mimicking each other. There is…

    For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program.     This is an amazing energetic piece by the presented of these instruments: piano, cowbell, timpani, maracas, voices (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). The tempo throughout the piece are rallentando and fast tempos. The piece sounded strong, powerful, harmonizing in between the instrument, but also chilling at the sacred movement where it got slow and a bit softer. Overall, the dynamics where mezzo forte, forte, tenuto, crescendo, and sforzando.     The music pace was upbeat and gentle, and was a continuous flow. This lasted throughout the entire performance. The dynamics of the band were setup to allow the sax to have the strongest, most powerful sound with the other instruments blending together at the same volume. The volume was varied at times though, with the instruments giving a strong, loud “jolt” of music to really give a full effect. The texture of the band was also varied, with there being a very heavy texture at times when all seven instruments were playing, to a very light texture, when just two were.
