Summer Cut Short In the United States, 60% of high school teachers feel that school should go year round with intermediate breaks. When school starts again in mid August, students have just gotten back from summer vacation, and have forgotten the material learned the year before. This a problem for teachers when they begin to teach new things that students need last year's information for. Some teachers have suggested that summer break should be shortened and other breaks should be longer so that students have less time to forget content. Parents and students argue that students need time in the summer more than other times because that is more convenient to them. If students are away from school for a shorter amount of time, they will not forget information and will remember how to work properly. For example, if students are away for a long time, they will forget how to work and act in the school environment. However, if they are not of as long, then they will remember more and act properly in school. Staying in school for longer periods of time will make students get better grades. When students stay in school and work more, they will have more practice and perform better on tests, leading to students obtaining better grades. Finally, with summer break shortened, school life will ultimately improve. With students being in school together for longer time frames, they will have to be around each other longer, and that will cause new friendships to be made and relationships to form. As the old saying goes, “ Friends in high school are friends for life.” Some people say that summer break should not be shortened and school should not go year round.
