Why school should start later
Early school start times have been a part of everyday life, and it seems they may never change, when in reality, when to start school has been a controversial topic for years. But there will be a solution. High schools should adopt a later school start time. Adopting a later school start time makes many beneficial changes to our students and our community.
Many people think that early school start times are helpful for our teens. For instance kids will have more time after school if it ends early and students will have more time to complete homework and take part in extracurricular activities because of this. Teens also may have to work after school and by ending school later they may not be able to get to their work on time, thus hurting their families. Some argue that starting school early also prepares teens for adulthood, due to the fact that most jobs tend to have the similar work hours. Furthermore, later high school start times can cause trouble for parents’ work schedules, because they may not be able to drop and pick their kids up before and after school. Later school start times may also be expensive, mainly because the bus schedule for students in the morning and evening must change to accommodate a different school schedule. Changing a school start time can also cause resistance from students who don't want their after school activities to change. Additionally, students will have less time to access public resources such as libraries if schools ended an hour later. Also if a school changes its schedule all the schools around it would have to change its after school activities to adjust, for instance if two school teams wanted to play each other, deciding on a game time would be difficult due to the fact that they have different schedules. A students life can also get affected. By ending school later they may not be able to be with friends, more time will be spent on homework than on free time. Finally, families may have their own activities after

Schools that have adjusted their schedule to start later than the standard 8:03 a.m schedule have students with better performance, so it would optimal to adjust the start time to 8:30 a.m minimum. By further allowing more time in the morning, both teachers and students can be more satisfied since they can have breakfast or do whatever they wish to do. It is debateful that starting school later means it ends later in the evening, however with the current schedule it causes more harm overall - thus compromise is necessary for better results instead of personal…

High school classes should begin later in the day and end later in the day to accommodate students' natural sleep clocks, this would get them on a schedule and would also allow them to stay energized through they whole day. One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

If you had the choice, would you choose to sleep or go to school? Wouldn’t you want school to start later so you could get your nine hours? Well, it’s not as ideal as it seems. For the past few years, the Littleton Public Schools district, along with other school districts around the country, discussed the idea of the change of school start and end times. For the most part of this school year, the district has started to ask parents and students for their opinions and to come up with different solutions that will appeal to everyone. One of the biggest reasons that the district would need to change the times befalls the lack of sleep that students receive. Pamela McKeever, the leader of a study of adolescent sleep said that, "...research explains…

One reason schools should start later is because of the importance of how students could more effortlessly become involved with school. By starting school later, it would allow students to score higher in their core classes because students are able to get more sleep, which results in increased performances (Wahlstrom 10). To further support this, Wahlstrom mentions in a study done in multiple different high schools, “Statistically significant increases in the 1st period grade point average in one or more core courses of English, math, social studies, and science with start times from 8:00-8:30 [in the morning]” (11). She then continues with, “Significant increases in grade point average in all 1st-period core courses for all semesters in all grades in Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming, with a start time of 8:55 [in the morning]” (11). This…

Starting school later is a big decision for students, teachers and also parents. Students get tired and to a point where enough is enough. When there is late start because of bad weather, students seem to get to school and be alert. It is very hard to wake up in the morning for some students because of the night before they might have had to do homework or get caught up doing errands and they seem to go to sleep late and they don’t get much hours of sleep. Schools need to think more about students academics and really look into if that student is behind, or is not getting enough sleep and do something about it like make school start later. One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if…

Why does school start so early? Get up at 6:00, take a shower, get dressed, eat , brush teeth, go to school. I never want to get up in the morning. In my opinion school would be much better if it started at like nine. School isn’t bad at all. Having to get up makes school depressing. Making school start later will allow kids to get more sleep, students wouldn’t have to rush at night when doing work and it could possibly be safer for kids and more convenient for parents. Most students would agree that school should start later.…

Whether it is about the teachers or the school lunches the majority of teenagers persistently complain about school, yet there is one issue that seems to bother teenagers a lot more than others; early school starts. Many will argue that we are just giving in to the demands of the teenage generation, arguing that school starting times have been the same for years without problems, but life in the 21st century has changed dramatically over the past decade and to improve life even more we must get rid of early school starts.…
