Why Is It Important To Become Racial Discrimination Now?
When you hear the word racism what comes to mind? For me, I think of the years Blacks and other races were forced into slavery. I think of the times Blacks were segregated and treated differently than others. They could not attend the same events as whites, obtain the same jobs as whites, or even use the same restaurants as whites. In 1954, the Supreme Court outlawed segregated public education facilities for both blacks and whites. And by 1964 the Civil Rights Act was to bring segregation to a complete end. Making all races in America equal. So why minorities are still treated unequal almost 50 years later? In an article found on CNN.com, “49% of Americans see racism as a big problem. Another 64% says that racial issues have increased over the last decade. And over half of the Black population states they have experience some form of racial discrimination in their lifetimes.”(1) In 1868, when the 14th Amendment was passed, it was stated that citizenship was granted to all people born or naturalized within the United States, which included former slaves who were recently …show more content…
The day I was born my mom’s father came by to see me. Upon his arrival he was informed that I was mixed with African American and immediately disowned me. He did not agree with the pigmentation of my skin color. Another time I remember was when my friends and I were hanging down in the Westport area and were forced to place our hands on the wall while police officers searched us. When asked why we were being searched the officer responded with, “Because you guys looked as if you were up to no good.” Racial profiling is what was taking place. In conclusion, discrimination can be found in every part of the U.S. in many different forms. We have people who discriminate against sexual preference, religious beliefs, race, and many others.     My friend Tony is an American citizen of seventeen, born and raised in the United States but he is of African American descent. Once when his mother needed eggs, she sent him to the grocery store. On the way, he was pulled over by a police officer and questioned, after fifteen minutes the police officer let him go. Was he speeding? Driving recklessly? No, there was nothing wrong with his driving. The only reason he was pulled over and questioned was because he was African American.     In the United States of America racial discrimination still exists to this day. Minorities in our country are not seen as equal people. When a person is deprived of their human rights it makes them feel degraded and troubled. In order to become a more civilized country, we must forget the color of our own skin and live with each other as one.
