Who Was to Blame for the Deaths of Romeo and Juliet?
Who was to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet?

In this essay I will be exploring the reasons as to why some people would argue that a certain person or people are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
I will show understanding of the plot, character and themes and Shakesperes use of language and dramatic devices within the play.
Firstly, some people believe that the parents of Romeo and Juliet were to blame for their deaths because of the ongoing feud between the two families. The argument between the Montague’s and Capulets is mentioned in the prologue, ‘Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break, to new mutiny, where civil hands make civil hands unclean, from forth the fatal loins of these two foes ... doth with their death bury their parents strife, the fearful passage of their parents rage’. The point is made, that if the two families did not have such hatred for each other, it would not have resulted in the deaths of the two ‘star crossed lovers’, Romeo and Juliet. It is almost certain that if the parents had gotten on right from the start, they would not have had a problem with the love that Romeo and Juliet shared and they would have let them get married to each other with probably no hesitation. ‘Disobedient wretch… get the to church a’ Thursday, or never after look me in the face.’ (3.5) this quote shows the pressure Juliets father put on her to marry Paris. If Lord and Lady Capulet had given Juliet their full support when growing up they may have understood her feelings for Romeo, therefore Juliet would not have had to go out of her way to try and stop the marriage her parents had arranged to one of the most important men in Verona, Paris.
Some may argue that Juliet’s parents, Lord and Lady Capulet were more responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. ‘When it did taste the warmwood on the nipple.’ (1.3) This quote backs up that the nurse had been more of a mother figure

In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo & Juliet we look at two star-crossed lovers, from opposite sides of an ancient grudge in the town of Verona and their struggle between fate and freewill. Shakespeare deliberately creates characters that can be held accountable for the tragic deaths of the central roles. Their untimely demise can be attributed to four contributing factors: The poor advice of Friar Lawrence and the Nurse, the two feuding households, the impulsive behaviour of our chief protagonists and the cruel bitter irony of fortune.…

Ultimately, I think Romeo and Juliet are to blame for their deaths. Yes, the long-lasting family feud could be blamed. Yes, Friar Laurence could be blamed for planning something of such high risk. Yes, Lord Capulet could be blamed for arranging Paris and Juliet to be married. Under all these circumstances, though, Romeo and Juliet could have made different decisions that wouldn’t have led to death. For instance, they could have chosen to take their time getting married, instead of rushing into it. Friar Laurence foreshadowed this point in act two, scene six. “These violent delights have violent endings...Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.” Also, if Romeo hadn’t let his anger get the best of him after Mercutio died, he wouldn’t have been…

Blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet can be pointed in several different directions. Not only characters were accountable for the calamity. Three main non-human contributors to the tragedy were fate, impulsiveness, and time. Fate played a part in Romeo's banishment from Mantua. His absence from the scene set a clear path for Paris to pursue his love interest. Romeo's impulsive behaviour guided him to make the decision to end his life after hearing the news of Juliet's death. Time was sped up when Old Capulet decided to bring Juliet's wedding forward a day. All these points were main contributors towards the tragedy in Romeo and Juliet.…

The families could not get along with each other. The feud led to many things that caused the deaths. Romeo was banished for killing Tybalt. Juliet was sad when Romeo left, but being forced to marry Paris was too much for her to handle. “The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love, And the continuance of their parents’ rage” This quote explains how Romeo and Juliet will have a problem loving each other because of their parents.…

First of all, the one that are responsible for their death is the Capulet. The first reason is Juliet’s mom doesn’t spend a lot of time with her and understand her. That is the most important thing that parents should do for their kids, but Juliet doesn’t have that. Most of her time, she spends with the nurse and relied on her. That make the distance between Juliet and her mom more farther. “ What say’st thou? Hast thou not a word of joy? Some comfort, nurse.” (Act 3, scene 5, pg 97). She tell the nurse to comfort her when she feel bad instead of her parents. The second reasons is the Capulet don’t listen to her and only do what they think are the best…

And also Lady Capulet which is Juliet's mother. Just like Juliet's father, Capulet, she did not want Romeo to be her daughter's husband but instead wants Juliet to get married to Paris which is a kinsman of the Prince. Which in turn was a part of the puzzle to make the tragedy happen, and so the Capulet's is held liable for over 25% of why this tragedy…

They each contributed to the problem in some way. The prince says “Capulet, Montague, see what a scourge is laid upon your hate,” (pg 130) implying that the fault lays in the feud. However, the servants reigniting the feud, Juliet and especially Romeo rushing their love, Lord Capulet’s stubbornness, Friar Lawrence’s needlessly complicated plan, and many other characters’ flaws are all to blame. Some have varying extents of blame, for example even though Romeo and Juliet rushed their love, teenage hormones are a reasonable excuse for this so some of the blame can be alleviated from them. Whereas the feud between the two families is the obstacle that made Romeo and Juliet’s love complicated to begin with, which puts more of the blame on the heads of the households. But in general, everyone can be said to have some amount of blame for the death of Romeo and…

Some of the evidence from the play states that the family’s hatred is responsible for the tragedies. At the party, Juliet meets Romeo and they fall in love. After they kiss, Juliet finds out that Romeo is a Montague and is horrified because they cannot be together due to their family feud. “My only love sprung from my only hate (Act I, scene 5, line 138)” This quote says that the only person she has loved is the only person she has to hate. Even though the hate is of his name and not his person. This is the reason they cannot be together. It is almost as if their love is cursed. That they shall not be together no matter how much they love each other even if it cost them their life.…

First, the Capulets are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because they are unsupportive, uncaring, and inconstant. For example, they wanted to disown juliet because she declared she did not want to marry Paris. This example depicts Capulet not supporting his daughter’s desires, although he wants the best for her. In other words, if Capulet had not forced Juliet to marry Paris, she would not have tried to find a way out of the marriage. Additionally, Lady Capulet does not care for her own daughter’s wants and desires. As a result of not caring for her daughter, Lady capulet unknowingly cause Juliet to plot a way out of the wedding. However, Lady Capulet’s uncaring ways caused her to ignore Juliet’s wishes. By not taking Juliet’s feelings…
