“Yesterday, December 7th, 1942 -- a date which will live in infamy-- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made this famous speech that changed the tide of the Second World War. President Roosevelt made this speech after a sudden attack on an American naval base called Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This attack was carefully planned by Japan and the admiral of Japan’s Navy and Commander of the Combined Fleet Isoroku Yamamoto. Mitsuo Fuchida, a captain of the Imperial Navy Air Service, lead the first wave of bombers at 7:55 to attack Pearl Harbor. In the aftermath, 2403 people died, and 1178 people were wounded. The next day, FDR made his famous speech and America entered WWII. Afterword, thousands of innocent Japanese-Americans were segregated to find the Japanese traitors. Pearl Harbor changed the course of WWII. Pearl Harbor was planned for almost a year before it was carried out. In January 1941, General Yamamoto began discussing a potential surprise attack on Hawaii. America received notice and assumed that the target would be Manila, Philippines, which was controlled by America. Over the months, Japan continued to precisely plan. Then at 7:48 Hawaii time, the planes took off. At 7:58, 353 planes bombed pearl harbor in two waves. The Japanese wreaked havoc on Hawaii.The damage was bad, but not completely unfixable. An astounding 2403 people died, with an additional 1178 people were injured. Many of Pearl Harbor’s defenses were taken down. Every single one of our 186 aircraft was destroyed. All eight of our battleships were damaged, and four were sunk. Fortunately, we were able to salvage and put all the other ships to use in WWII but the USS Arizona, which still is at the bottom of the harbor. It has been leaking tears of oil for almost 77
