What is Project Management? Project management is more complicated and extensive than people think. One definition of project management is “the process of guiding a project from its beginning through its performance to its closure.” There are three operations that project management entails: planning, controlling, and organizing. These operations are seen from beginning to end. In project management it is important to keep many challenges of project management in mind so you can control, plan, and organize your projects successfully. Project management requires detailed planning for its success, projects are unique and their budgeted accordingly, conflict prone, and projects require creative and fluid teams. Organizations will use project management to give members the responsibility and authority to achieve a goal of the organization. There are four types of project categories: derivative, platform, breakthrough, and R&D projects.
An important aspect of project management is the team members. Project management is made up of three groups. The project manager is the person ultimately responsible for the success of the project. Functional managers are the team members’ direct line supervisor. Lastly, the functional employees also known as the team members are responsible for successfully completing the project.
One of the first orders of business in project management is to establish project schedules. This is to help keep a project on task and to allocate for enough time to finish the project. It involves determining duration and sequence. A network diagram helps with keeping a project on task and on time because it includes event, activity, and time span.
It is a critical step in project management to allocate your resources. You need to establish who, how much, and when. A skills roster helps with determining your resources by first determining what skills you need for the project and then what potential team members. It is very
