2. How does the music of the Classical period differ from the music of the Baroque period?…
History of music from 1650 to 1800 can be described by three major periods, the middle Baroque, the late Baroque / early Classical, and Classical eras. The middle Baroque can be described as a time of developing and standardizing musical forms, styles, and conventions, and then obeying those conventions in the creation of new music. The second era found the undoing of these conventions in two important areas, prompting the end of the Baroque and beginning of the Classical era. The final era describes a period of newer conventions, built from the changes presented to Baroque music by its creators. This evolution can best be understood by careful investigation of musical conventions through these three periods.…

In the featured book "Young people’s Concert," the author, Leonard Bernstein, explains the meaning of Classical music. Mr. Bernstein believes that people do not understand the exact meaning of classical music and they describe any music that isn’t pop or jazz as a classical music. He started his argument by giving examples about the mistakes that people do when they describe music and he found that the reason why people use inappropriate words to describe music is because people do not know why people started to call some certain types of songs as a classical music. According to Mr. Bernstein, classical music refers to a period of the history of music between 1700 to 1800. At last, Mr. Bernstein explains briefly the history of classical period.…
Music has a number of purposes and it has been used throughout the world for centuries. Our fore-parents have had the pleasure of listening to, and probably being a part of the use of music, although the music we know today may not necessarily be what they used long ago. Music way back from our ancestors may have entailed the use of rocks, sticks etc. Drums were later introduced and as time went on we have the pleasure of having instruments like guitars, violins, piano, flutes and many more included so that what we hear today sounds like heaven on earth. One thing, for sure in which scholars believe, is that the purpose music served long ago is not the same as today.…

Music. Fascinating both by it's diverse individual styles and the inevitable fusion of different genres which in turn have created other completely new and unique styles of music. Classical music is a perfect example. The earliest forms of classical music were composed in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and displayed a very complicated and sophisticated form of writing incorporating a wide range of instruments and used the principle of multi instrumentation which achieved a very full symphonic sound which in turn led to the creation of specially designed halls to facilitate the sound. The origins of the music were also diverse, many compositions having been written for the stage, composers such as Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky' who…

Google defines classical music as “Serious or conventional music that follows long-established principles rather than a folk, jazz, or popular tradition”, by this definition classical music spans from way back to medieval times right up to modern day. Whereas technically, classical music is music that was composed in the classical era (1730-1820). The music composed in this relatively short period of time abided by a set list of characteristics. Classical music had a lighter, clearer texture than its predeceasing era, it utilised a slightly larger orchestra, replaced the formerly popular harpsichord with the recently developed piano and was mainly homophonic. Comparing early and later classical music by this definition would make for short reading as, by the nature of having musical periods, no drastic changes occurred until the next musical age (the romantic period…

Music has always been an integral part of human civilization. It is what binds individuals to their culture, people to their country. From the majestic stories of India to the concert halls of Vienna to the radio station playing mariachi music here in LA, music pervades our lives. Since our beginnings, music has accompanied rituals and ceremonies, and as time passed, began to fill other roles in religion, society, education, and entertainment. Within these different categories, music served to educate, unite, provide accompaniment to activities, and also function as a means of courtship. Like all things, however, philosophers found inherent dangers and benefits of music. Music served various purposes throughout the history of mankind. Its development and the attitudes surrounding it have changed as time elapsed. Plato felt that it was beneath the elite to listen to music for pure enjoyment, stating that only "commonplace people" hired the services of women to dance and sing for their enjoyment. The elite should believe that music to be used for higher purposes, such as celebrating religion, education and ritual. Conversely, Aristotle believed that music could be used for the purposes of entertainment and relaxation, as long as it was not excessive nor distracting. Along with the emergence of the Renaissance came the movement of Humanism. Humanism stated that the cultivated and sophisticated aristocrat should be able to write poetry and compose music as easily as lead a brave army into battle. Music for them was encouraged as a pastime, and having musical ability during the late sixteenth century was critical to being popular in polite society because music took a new social function. A conversation between the Count and Lord Gaspar in Castiglione's book revealed an appreciation for the qualities of music during the time of the Renaissance. Prior to the renaissance, music was an art enjoyed only by the elite. However, two…
Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert are some of the greatest and most known classical composers of all time. Most people have at least heard of them, and most of them have likely heard some of their music as well. Research has shown that listening to classical music have been proven to reduce stress and anxiety and therefore put people in a calmer and happier state of mind and body. It also helps people retain information as they study. Even if the person is not consciously listening to or paying attention to the music, their subconscious picks it up and reduces anxiety and even depression. I believe that music does help people; some more than others; study and stay focused while doing work as long as it is lyricless and…
In the books; The Clouds written by Aristophanes, and The Apology, written by Plato, the philosopher Socrates is portrayed in two different ways. Plato, being a loyal follower of Socrates, portrays him as being a very simple man who is always open to learning new wisdom. However, Aristophanes portrays him as an atheist who practices sophistry along with a number of different crimes. People question whether or not Plato exaggerated the character of Socrates in an effort to gain sympathy for him, while others question if Aristophanes wrote the book The Clouds to slander Socrates’ character.…

The Classical Era saw the convergence of two opposing schools of thought in society. The first was the leftover from the Baroque Era, which said that the nobility had absolute power of society. The second was from the middle class, who said that the nobility had gone too far with their power and should give some of their power over to the middle class.…
