Key Concepts in Web Authoring

What is HTML?
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is an authoring language that sets up web pages that can be viewed on the World Wide Web.

The Development of HTML versions and backwards compatibility issues:
HTML 1: In 1980 Tim Berners-Lee created a system to use and share documents and later on in 1991 lead to “HTML tags” also known as the first HTML.
HTML 2: In 1993 browsers added their own tags to HTML and this caused confusion. Dan Connolly and colleagues from the W3C collected all the tags from the different browsers and put them into a draft document creating HTML 2.
HTML 3.0: Dave Raggett wanted to improve HTML with new ideas hopefully releasing HTML 3, but the draft document was too big and the idea was soon dropped.
HTML 3.2: The US Navy used a CALS table model and requested that Raggett make them a draft that suited them this was a development that lead to HTML 3.2.
HTML 4.0: The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) recommended a new HTML (HTML 4.0) which consisted of new tags , style sheets and script frames, this table became official in 1998.
HTML 4.01: It was recommended by the W3C, offers 3 variations like HTML 4.0 and contains about 7 changes; one being an attribute can be coded as att and a new tag.
HTML 5: Is in current development its format will consist of new elements, new attributes, full CSS3 support, video and audio, 2D / 3D graphics, Local Storage, and Web Applications.

This shift toward tablet computing - still in its early days - has already had a major affect on the way people use the Web and how websites are constructed. HTML5 was one of the key buzzwords of the year, in no small part because adoption of the technology makes it easier for Web developers for forge apresence on any screen. Apple's refusal to support Flash, coupled with the popularity of its devices, has led developers to more aggressively adopt open standards like HTML5 and even caused Adobe to abandon the mobile version of Flash altogether.…

XML, or Extensible Markup Language, is an internet language used to represent text and data that can be used without much human or machine intelligence. XML is a lot like HTML except for two major differences. The first is separation of form and content. HTML mostly consists of tags defining the appearance of text. In XML the tags generally define the structure and content of the data, with actual appearance specified by a specific application or an associated stylesheet. The second is XML is extensible. Tags can be defined by individuals or organizations for some specific application, whereas the HTML standard tagset is defined by the World Wide Web Consortium.…
