Water temperature effects on sugar
1. Introduction
The purpose of my project is to demonstrate how water temperature affects the dissolving of sugar in liquid. Everything in our universe is made up of particles which are in constant motion. In a solid state particles move the slowest while in a liquid state particles move the fastest. Under the right conditions, solid particles (the solute) when mixed in liquid (the solvent) can form a solution. This occurrence is called dissolving. I wanted to answer the question; does the temperature of water affect the speed at which sugar dissolves? According to my research, there are many different factors the affect the dissolving rate of a substance. The rate of dissolving refers to how quickly a solute dissolves in a solvent. This means how fast or how slow the sugar particles dissolves in the water. Stirring a solution is just one of the things I did to make the sugar dissolve faster. Other factors that make a difference include the size of the particles such as sugar cubes or crystals, the temperature of the water, and the concentration of the solution. Learning that these factors contribute to the rate of dissolving a solute, I hypothesize that the increase in water temperature will decrease the dissolving time of the sugar cube and sugar crystal. For this experiment the temperature of the water represents the independent variable. The dependent variable is represented by the dissolving time of the sugar cube and sugar crystal. The amounts of water, sugar cube and crystal, brand of sugar and the sugar measurements represent the constants. The cold water is the control.
2. Materials:
Water
Measuring cup
2 glasses
White sugar cubes
Brown sugar crystal
Spoon for stirring
Thermometer
Stopwatch
Note pad for findings

3. Step-By-Step Procedure:

First, I measured a ½ cup of hot water using a measuring cup and poured measurement into one (1) glass. I added five (5) sugar cubes and started the stopwatch then began stirring with a spoon. I

The independent and dependent variable for this experiment was the male fruit fly and the female fruit fly and the off springs. The controlled variables in this experiment were temperature, media, yeast, to much of the yeast would kill the fruit fly’s so the class had to make sure that to much was not poured into the vials. this had to be controlled well. 6- 10 ten grains of yeast with water and media. A change in temperature could also tamper with the experiment as well as messing with the vials all of these variables had to be controlled in order for the experiment to do…

How the experiment was conducted was first I got the four glasses out and filled each three quarters the way full with water for a measurement. I then poured two glasses of the water into two separate pots and let boil. As soon as they boiled I added the salt to one, sugar to the other, until the solutions were completely saturated. Then very carefully, I poured the salt mixture into two cups, and the sugar mixture into the other cups, being sure the keep the levels equal. With the four pencils I tied a shoe string to the middles, cut long enough to just barely touch the bottom of each cup with the bottom of the string.…

For the scientist’s experiment the scientist will be experimenting with additives and gel. We will be adding different substances such as table salt, citric acid, and sugar. The scientist’s problem statement is “What kind of substances make gel the strongest?” The independent variable will be the different additives (Table salt, citric acid, and sugar) which will be added using tablespoons. The dependent variable is the strength of the gel which will be measured using a scale of 10. The constant variable is the type of gel used and the amount of substance added to the gel which will be 2 tablespoons.…

In this experiment, we will be finding out what happens to gummy bears when put in different solutions to observe and predict why they dissolve, shrink, or grow in each of them. The solutions that we are using are 2 % Low-Fat milk, apple cider vinegar, filtered water, sugar, baking powder, and salt. The prediction is that when the gummy bears are in baking powder, they will be hypotonic, but will be hypertonic in sugar. Our controls are the same intervals of time and the same type of gummy bear. Since they are made purely of different forms of sugar, when mixed with the sugar water, it will most likely expand.…

The dependant variables (the variables influenced by the different beverages) is the running time (the time that the person will run in one lap), the amount of pushups done in one minute, how many sit-ups is completed by two minutes, and the number of jumping jacks that are done in thirty seconds. I believe that Gatorade will help your athletic performance the most, therefore the other drinks such as water, Arizona Tea, milk, Mott’s Apple Juice, and Coca-Cola is the control group. The controlled variables in the experiment (items that will stay the same) is…

The rate of a chemical reaction depends on the area of the surface area. A solid that is present in a chemical solution can only react when particles collide with the surface of the solid. If the area of the solid surface is made bigger then more particles can collide with it per second and the rate of reaction increases. You can increase the surface area of a solid by breaking it down into smaller pieces. A solid that is broken down into a powder has the largest surface area and therefore has the fastest reaction…

The purpose of this lab is to determine whether salt affects the movement of water in the cell. Independent variable is the factor that affects the value of variables dependent to it. In osmosis lab, the independent variables are the potato and onions. The dependent variable is the variable whose value is measured to determine the extent of the effect of another variable to it, as in an experiment. In osmosis lab, the dependent variable is the length of the potato. The controlled variables are the amount of water, amount of salt, and the size of the potato. If the potato is placed in a higher salt concentration, then the potato will decrease its size.…
