EXPERIMENT 1: WATER CRYSTALIZATION
OBJECTIVES:
To determine the percentage of water in aluminium sulphate hydrate
To calculate the water of crystallization for aluminium sulphate hydrate
To prove that a hydrate solution will lose some of it mass after heated
INTRODUCTION
A hydrated salt is a crystallize salt molecule that is weakly attached to a certain number of water molecules. Salt is created when an acid's anion (negative ions) and a base's cation (positive ions) are combined to produce an acid-base molecule. A salt molecule that is not bound to any water molecules is an anhydrate, and a salt molecule that is bound to water molecules is a hydrated salt. In a hydrated salt, the water molecules are transforming into the crystalline structure of the salt

Nowadays, aluminium sulphate is one of the most important salt in industry, it can obtain by heated aluminium sulphate hydrate. The uses of aluminium sulphate are
1. used in water purification
2. Used in mordant dyeing and printing textiles
3. Used to reduced the ph of the soil
4. Aluminium sulfate is the active ingredient of some antiperspirants
5. Used as waterproofing agent and accelerator in concrete.
6. It is also used in styptic pencils, and pain relief from stings and bites.:

Al2 (SO4)3 *16H2O (s) Al2 (SO4)3 (s) + 16H2O (g)
Or generally,
Hydrate salt heating anhydrous salt + water vapor

MATERIAL / APPARATUS
Aluminium sulphate hydrate
The crucible and lid
Bunsen burner
2 Wire gauzes
Tripod stand
Electronic balance
Lighter
METHODOLOGY
1. The crucible was heated for 10 minutes to remove the impurities
2. The crucible was cooled and weighted, the mass was recorded
3. Approximately 1 g of Aluminium sulphate hydrate was put in the crucible and weighted
4. The weight of the hydrate was calculated
5. The crucible was heated for ten minutes with the lid almost covered
6. The crucible was cooled and reweight, yhe mass is recorded
7.

The first step in the experiment was to measure the mass of the crucible for trial 1. The second step was to add the Sodium bicarbonate using the scoopula into the crucible. The mass of the crucible and the Sodium bicarbonate was weighed. Next, the mass of just the Sodium bicarbonate was determined by subtracting the mass of the crucible and the substance by the mass of the crucible by itself. For all three trials, the mass of just the Sodium bicarbonate was exactly 2 grams.…

The process is to record the tare weight of a clean crucible. According to WiseGEEK, tare weight is the weight of an object (such as a jar, a cup, or, in this case, a crucible) when it is empty. You will add 2g of the copper sulfate hydrate crystals into the crucible, and then you weigh the crucible with the copper sulfate hydrate crystals and record the data. You then heat the crucible with the hydrate in it with a Bunsen burner for slightly more than 10 minutes, and then you weigh and record the data into your data table. After the weighing, it is reheated for five more minutes, and again weighed and recorded. If the masses are not within 0.05g of each other, you reheat it for another two minutes, weigh the masses again, and record the data. Keep reheating it until the weights are within 0.05g of each other. Then you will calculate and analyze…

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the percent by mass in a hydrated salt, as well as learn to handle laboratory apparatus without touching it. Most substances have water as a part of its composition, either absorbed or bonded to the substance. Many salts in nature, the grocery store, or from chemical suppliers are chemically hydrated with water molecules, referred to as the waters of crystallization. Anhydrous salts are sometimes created when heat is applied to the salt removing the water molecules. Some salts have strongly bonded water molecules that will not cause the formation of anhydrous salts, regardless the intensity of the heat. 1…

First we measured and recorded the weight of a crucible and its lid. Then we added some Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate into the crucible and measured and recorded the values again. After, we set up the apparatus as shown in Fig.1. We left the crucible over the fire for five minutes. Then we took it off and measured the weight of the Crucible and the residue. We then put it back on the fire to see if the weight would reduce further. This was repeated three times untill the compound was no longer reducing in weight.…

The mass percent of water was determined using the mass of water and dividing it by the total mass of the hydrate and then multiplying that answer by 100%. The number of moles of water in a hydrate was determined by taking the mass of the water released and dividing it by the molar mass of water. The number of moles of water and the number of moles of the hydrate was used to calculate the ratio of moles of water to moles of the sample. This ratio was then used to write the new and balanced equation of the dehydration process. The sample was then rehydrated to the original state and the percent of the hydrate recovered was calculated by using the mass of the rehydrated sample by the mass of the original hydrate and then multiplied by 100%.…
