Walden University Goal Statement

Program: Doctor of Education Specialization: Teacher Leadership

Personal/Professional Goals
Pursuing something new is fun and exciting, especially if the pursuit positively impacts someone else. I am grateful for the opportunity to re-enter grad school, this time at the doctorate level, to realize a dream that I’ve had since the beginning of my teaching career. My goal is to be sharp, skilled, creative and effective as a teacher and leader so that I can significantly influence the organization and overall culture of my school, other teachers, students, and the community. A necessary attribute of a great teacher should be the desire to seek ways to improve learning for all children. I am committed to learning and developing the knowledge and skills that a great leader needs to make a difference in education. I believe all students can have academic success.
Prior to actually stepping foot into the classroom, I was not prepared to deal with the kinds of real problems that many of my students were facing. Problems such as abuse, neglect, hunger, out-all-night mothers, and jailed fathers were and still are common for many of them. When I found that many of these children performed below expectations in their academic classes, I eagerly began to try to find ways to assist. As a music educator, I began teaching and composing songs and chants to help motivate students to do their best and make big dreams, regardless of social issues that affect them. I began to collaborate with their home room teachers to incorporate the areas that needed reinforcement into my

Our last observation this semester was with Rachel Pollard at Hartwood Elementary School. This school includes grades K-5. Mrs. Pollard is in a very unique situation, because she sees each of her classes for forty minutes twice a week. Since she has twice as much time with her students as compared to most other music teachers, her students are able to advance quickly with their musical skills. This benefit was very obvious through my observations. Mrs. Pollard’s lessons were well thought-out and she had clear objectives in mind for each activity. Everything she did served a purpose, including singing a song to move the students into a new seating arrangement and her “point checks” at the beginning of class.…

I teach them how to use proper diction, proper posture and eye contact. I teach them how to be respectful. I teach them how to apply these skills to other areas of their lives. In the Summer of 2011, I was privileged to work with the children at Vacation Bible School. This included children from my church and members of the community who did not attend the church. I took reluctant kids from apprehensive parents and transformed them into excited, energetic, eager singers. I transferred my love of music to this group of 86 kids, who became motivated and inspired by my energy, innovation and gymnastic skills. Through the use of interactive signs and audience participation, I evoked in them a spirit of leadership while teaching good moral values. Each child wanted a chance to lead out in front with me. Parents were awed at the transformation in their kids after one week. My goal is to unlock the potential in…

I will display this mission statement on my locker door, next to my desk so I will have an easy access to it, especially during times when I may become frustrated and feel like giving up on a student who may be failing my class and do not seem to care. It will remind me that my purpose is to serve and motivate others to reach their full potential. As Lee Canter explained in the video ‘ The Power of belief ‘, a high performing teacher never gives up because “they believe that all children can succeed”(Laureate Education, 2010). It is this kind of teacher who can make a difference in the lives of the…

As the principal of James S. Russell Middle School, my philosophy is simple. I believe that if we invest in our students and expand upon their previous knowledge, we can explore uncharted territory. By “thinking outside of the box" and striving to teach the whole child, we are destined to intersect with success. My belief is that if I continue to successfully motivate the RMS student, faculty, and staff to do their very best and extend their personal limits, the success for our division will be exhibited…

I was inspired to work within the field of education by several individuals within my family that have gone on and receive bachelor’s degrees, masters and even doctoral degrees. That has given me the drive to become a teacher; an African-American male teacher who did not have a good up-bringing and who is able to make a difference for those that maybe walking down the same path as I did. Furthermore, I believe I belong here at Bethune-Cookman University because it has been invested within me and I am a diamond…

Something that I found really innovative was that the presenter, Dr. Anne Meeker, was so passionate and entertaining that managed to make the audience participate actively. While at first I felt a bit awkward to stand up and sing, sign and make gestures I was full of enthusiasm when I saw that the professionals and the educators were confident to sign and imitate gestures. I think that as educators we should not be afraid to do funny and entertaining things in our classroom or during an intervention. There are four different strategies for organizing an instruction based on music. Firstly, Saarikallio (2010) supported that emotional self-regulation can be one of the basic reasons that people are engaged with music. Moreover, music seems to help not only adults and adolescents but also young children to self-regulate their emotions and, depending on each specific case, calm or alert them (Saarikallio,2009). Secondly, Brownell (2002) referred to music adapted social stories that have been proved effective to help children internalize rules and expectations and afterwards retrieve them to face the challenges that occur. Thirdly, Vaiouli and Ogle (2014) emphasized on the importance of embedding music within the routines for children with disabilities. The use of familiar precomposed songs could create successful transitions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder…

When I first decided to become an educator, I wanted to serve students reflecting a community similar to my own upbringing. I have seen a number of failed reforms that have been targeted towards inner city communities and the negative impact inflicting lower income communities. Exploring my own identity, ethnicity and background is a huge factor in my preference for minimizing the achievement gap and seeking to elevate myself as a leader to advocate for educational equity against injustices. I was inspired to be a part of the change for my community after I spent a year substituting in both Atlanta Public and Fulton County…

When I had first volunteered at a preparatory school as a teacher’s assistant, I was thrilled and excited. I enjoyed working with children and I admit, was slightly disillusioned with expectations that the children would be dutiful and effortless to watch over. Unfortunately, all my prior imaginations crashed the second I entered the classroom. Everywhere I saw, it was pure chaos. I dodged a flying crayon as I saw children running around throwing paper airplanes, balls, while others just stared at their iPads, focused on the latest game. Not a single one of them even listened to me or glanced at me as I tried to yell over the loud chatter.…

I believe that greatness is within all of us; we just need a little help finding it sometimes. I have come to understand that one caring person can make all the difference in someone else’s life. As I venture further into my teaching career, I hope to help my students to Education is a journey of seeking answers and experiencing. Every human being has the ability to learn and apply meaning to education. Learners should not be encouraged to surrender to the ideals and beliefs of a set curriculum. Rather than settling for the minimum learning requirements written out based on the expectations of the state, students should encounter knowledge, build a solid structured foundation, and then branch out to master the skills and ideas that they wish to develop and pursue. Learning then becomes a map of the sea. Students may be influenced by the way the wind blows and the tossing of the waves, but they have the knowledge and ability to adjust their sails to follow the path of the desired horizon. As educators we should not be neutral in our teaching, but radical and dynamic so that our students can learn beyond what is normal, static, and unchanging. I believe that the historical foundations of knowledge and the truths revealed by the past are vital to the knowledge of the future, but I also believe that we are agents of change and that we should teach our students to not only build upon and consecrate the truths of our past, but to challenge them and use them to think critically and make new history.…

Becoming a successful teacher has been a desire in my heart for many years. As a high school student, I had the desire to enter the medical field. The turning point toward a teaching career occurred when I became employed with a small preschool as the three-year old toddler instructor. This job was extremely rewarding. It thrilled my heart to watch these small children grasp new concepts and develop throughout the year. The smiles on their faces when they learned to zip their coat, or say their ABC’s, or count to 100 was worth all the challenges you faced with a classroom of three-year old toddlers. Being able to see the glow on a child’s face when they succeed is indescribable and one of the reasons I want an education degree so that I can witness this experience daily.…

The key to a student’s success is the quality of their classroom teacher. I believe that in spite of any external obstacles (chaotic/troublesome home life, administrative incompetence, access to services, etc.) a quality teacher can positively impact a student’s life more profoundly than almost any other influence. I believe that Teach for America (TFA) cultivates, develops, and supports the type of teachers who can have this kind of impact. I seek to join TFA for this very reason; I want to positively impact students by providing a high quality experience in the classroom.…

Teachers have a very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young, impressionable children. With this responsibility comes great pride and joy. Therefore, as a high school teacher I want to strive to be what can be considered as, a "good teacher." A good teacher can be defined as someone who always pushes students to want to do their best while at the same time trying to make learning interesting as well as creative. A positive or negative influence from a teacher early on in life can have a great effect on the life of a child. As part of my goal statement I plan to incorporate all of these qualities to become the teacher that I expect and want to be.…
