Character Analysis of the Monster from Frankenstein
Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein, primarily focuses on Victor Frankenstein who discovers the creation of life not realizing the consequences of his actions. From his experiment, an innocent monster was birthed into a uneducated society, with the intentions to feel love as a family and a sense of belonginess.
Victor Frankenstein is first introduced as an innocent, but curious scientist. His curiosity led to his liking of life. Victor was fascinated with the concept of creation. He felt that in his abilities he could create life, and he did. The monster woke confused and scared of his where beings. This frightened Victor, and he soon realized he made a huge mistake. He runs in to save her just as her father comes forward with a rifle. He shoots the monster in the shoulder and screams at him to step away. The monster runs off this time, but angry. He ponders the question of how humanity could be so cruel to someone that is only trying to fit in. He then ponders the cruelty of his creator, "Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed? I know not; despair had not yet taken possession of me; my feelings were those of rage and revenge. I could with pleasure have destroyed the cottage and its inhabitants and have glutted myself with their shrieks and misery." (87) Left alone in a cave, the monster finally encounters Victor. He tells his story of loneliness and promises not to hurt Victor if he creates another like himself so he wouldn’t feel so lonely in this world. His only wish in life is to belong in a world where he shouldn’t. After realizing halfway through the process that he was making another mistake, Victor destroys the second monster. The monster is left in complete anger and disgust for Victor, he swears to kill the one he loves on his wedding night. Victor becomes incredibly ill and the monster already killed off Victor’s youngest brother, and close friend. Scared that the monster will take his newly wed wife, Victor sends her away and goes to find the monster, as he leaves he hears his wife’s struggles as the monster kills her. Victor soon becomes deathly ill and passes away. After he dies, the monster weeps over his body and mentions now that his creator has died, he too can end his
