Vaping: Nicotine and Electronic Cigarette
My Beginnings With Ecigs

I have been vaping since June of 2012 and smoked my last analog on August 15th of 2012 after a 30 year habit that ended at 2ppd. Two packs a day was starting to go into a three pack per day habit and if I hadn’t quit smoking, I think by now I’d be up to 3ppd if I lived that long.

My husband talked for months about ecigarettes back then. I listened but had no real interest. I had already tried almost everything to quit and nothing had worked; ecigs seemed like another gimmick to me…a way for someone to make a fast buck at my expense.

One day my husband brought a bag home and told me to open it up so I did and pulled out two square, magnetic boxes in which were two electronic cigarette starter kits. They looked like real analogs only heavier to hold. He had also purchased extra cartomizers in menthol flavor.

We quickly looked over the instruction manual and began charging the little batteries. It wasn’t hard to figure out.

Once the batteries were fully charged with the little green indicator light, we pulled them off the charger and proceeded to try our very first ecig.

Wow! I liked it! I kept “smoking” my new ecig like a pro while thinking to myself, “Hey, this could actually work to make me stop smoking!”

After the first day, I was still liking my new ecig but was going through the carts(cartomizers) like nobody’s business. At $24 for a pack of 5, and using 3 per day, I calculated the cost out to be higher than smoking real analogs….and that after paying $300 or more for our kits!!! What a ripoff! No way was one cart a pack of smokes! Maybe 5 analogs tops, but certainly not a pack!

I got on the internet and searched for electronic cigarette. I ended up landing on a site that had TONS of information that I was looking for called ECF, or Electronic Cigarette Forum. I could not believe my eyes! The next few months were spent doing all kinds of research.

I quickly learned what we had was known as a “cigalike” ecig and that we needed something more powerful if we were to get the full experience of “vaping” (a new term I picked up). So I searched around and found something called an Ego. I could buy two Ego kits with cartomizers, juice, and extra goodies all for less than what one of our cigalike kits had costed. It was a bargain! I quickly ordered and anxiously waited for my very first “vape mail”.

When the new kits arrived, I ran to the mailbox and ran back in the house tearing open the package as I went. Awesome!!! Pretty colors…I had gotten forest green for the hubby and pink for myself.

It didn’t take me long to figure out how to charge the new batteries and fill the new Mega Cartomizers with eliquid. I had already read the instructions online.

Omg! The flavor, the vapor, the whole experience had just gone up a few levels!!! I had no idea “vaping” could be so awesome!

Having only purchased two small bottles of eliquid, I got back online and found another vendor that offered hundreds of flavors of eliquid and picked out about a dozen small samples. My new obsession had begun.

Only two months after starting ecigs, I lit an analog one morning and decided I didn’t want or need it so ran water over it and tossed in the garbage. Went and grabbed my ecig instead and that was my last day of smoking.

Since then, I’ve made ecigs a hobby, buying all kinds of various mods and devices. I love my new hobby and have a new lease on life as well. My husband hasn’t given up analogs completely still but I feel pretty confident he will when he’s ready.

Cigarette companies have recently introduced a new product often referred to as “electronic cigarettes.” Though in its early stages and only claiming a small percent of the market in comparison to combustible cigarettes, this new product has certainly caught the attention of the market “overnight.” So what is it about these new cigarettes that have caused them to become so popular? Electronic cigarettes are very similar to personal vaporizers. Though they do not contain tobacco, they do contain the nicotine found in tobacco plants. When inhaled, a heating element atomizes a liquid solution causing an aerosol “vapor” to be emitted from the end resembling smoke. Thicker smoke emitting versions have become more popular, as it seems that feature is the most attractive and appealing feature of the e-cig.…

There is also a major concern that electronic cigarettes are being used more and more by those under the age of 18, which is concerning many doctors and other healthcare professional. The e-cigarette liquid comes in a variety of flavors and the devices can come in different forms from “cigars and pipes [to] pens or USB memory sticks” (NIDA et al). “E-cigarettes first appeared in the U.S. market designed to help tobacco addicts wean themselves from smoking [also known as cessation]” (Raloff). While some people think that these products really help with smoking cessation, it is still hard to tell if e-cigarettes are really helping the problem of nicotine addiction or further aggravating the issue (NIDA et al). The FDA has been trying to regulate these products but are running into roadblocks; “e-cigarettes are not currently marketed as tobacco products or as devices having a therapeutic purpose” thus making it harder to place rules on the products. With limited regulations on e-cigarette cartridges and the liquids used therein, children and young teenagers are becoming attacked by these products with little protection from…
